I just saw Devdas in the theatre a few days back for the first time just to find out what is so special in the film to have been selected as India's entry into Oscars, and frankly speaking I found the film too ordinary to be even given the Indian awArds forget the big ones. There is no comparison between Lagaan and Devdas,Lagaan is a far superior product and Devdas just doesn't deserve to be placed in the same category as Lagaan. Moreover Devdas is not a film which has any social message, its just a film about a loser who could not do anything worthy in life and dies for a woman he just could not get. What a loser!

The director of the film,Sanjay leela bhansali has concentrated so much on the huge mansions, sets and designer sarees that the film has lost its soul....there is only 3 hrs of show in the film.Just by taking in a big starcast and spending 50 crores of money does not guarentee a superior product.I thought the first half was pathetic and very boring, especially the opening scene when the whole family gets to know that Devdas is coming back from London,it was so dramatic and unnatural.Everybody was at their over-acting best.It was torturous to watch that scene. The film pickes it grip only towards the second half and the last one hour of the film was pretty good.I also felt that the director was himself not sure of his product thats why he makes Paro(Aishwarya rai)and Chandramukhi(Madhuri dixit)meet in the film and then dance together...just to rope in the crowd, otherwise there was no need of the song in the film.

The casting of the film was also bad, infact I don't see any actors of today having the talent or grace to play Paro,Chandramukhi or Devdas or Chunnilal.Sharukh,as usual over-acted in the first half, but he was good in the last scene when he is too die...but he can never even come close to what Dilip kumar did in the earlier version of Devdas.Aishwarys rai, well she is a terrible actress and she has never impressed me and as for her looking good how long can you look at her, there has to be some substance too.Madhuri looked way too old and does not have the grace to do the role of Chandramukhi.Jackie was soo bad as chunnilal, that if Motilal 'ld have watched him he 'ld have died out of embarresment. The way his role was etched and all his dialouges and all was also for attracting crowds.

The plus point of the film was music by Ismail Durbar, but the oscar people have nothing to do with music. There has to be some substance and meaning in the film too.So with all these flaws where does DEVDAS stand in the OSCARS or for that matter does it even deserve a nomination in the oscars? The film just goes on to proof that how much lobbying goes behind all these awards, its not worth it.
