Well, Well, Well ( not the one with water ), I don't like Devdas nor any person who gets addicted to liquor for being unsuccessful in love; but, I will have to admit that the hype of costliest movie of Indian cinema dragged me to the cinema hall. As we all know, the movie is based on Sharadchandra Chattopadhyay's novel 'Devdas', so let me start with it.

SHARADCHANDRA CHATTOPADHYAY's DEVDAS

Devdas a simple but self - centered boy is born rich who loves Paro (who comes from a downtrodden family) since his childhood and plays with her all the day round, but, his father doesn't like Paro because she comes from a downtrodden family and so he kicks off Devdas to Cambridge University. After several years, Devdas returns but his love for Paro doesn't die. Due to several unavoidable circumstances Paro gets married to a landlord in another village. Prior to the marriage, Paro meets Devdas and tells him that lets runaway and break all the rigid rules and regulations of society; but, Devdas tells him that what my family would think about me, they would be insulted by the society and so rejects her proposal. After Paro's marriage Devdas gets depressed and leaves for a tour of India, where all of sudden he reaches the village where Paro resides. Devdas asks Paro to give up her marriage and break all the rules and regulations of society. Now, Paro rejects his proposal and states that when I asked you to do so, you rejected my proposal; don't I have feelings and emotions? should I behave according to what you say? If I give up, my parents would be insulted by the society and they wouldn't be able to live happily. And so, Devdas, the person who hated liquor gets addicted to it and starts visiting 'Kota' ( kind of a brothel ). Chandramukhi, a head of one of the brothels falls in love ( one-sided ) with Devdas and later gives up all her activities and leaves in a very small house. Devdas ruins himself with the help of liquor and is almost found in dead state.

PRAKASH KAPADIA's ( the script writer ) DEVDAS

Devdas, after marriage of Paro visits her house, purposely for convincing her to give up her marriage, while, the story is that he reaches Paro's village all of sudden and its not planned. Devdas gives away all his share in the property to his Bhabhi ( elder brother's wife ) when he comes to know about the conspiracy and so liquor doesn't ruin him. Rest of the story is similar.

SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI's ( SLB ) DEVDAS

Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi, all three of them resides in very big mansions which are perfectly architected; further Chandramukhi resides in a house which looks like a king's palace ( I will have to ask Sharadchandra that were your Devdas and Paro billionaires. I felt as if its more than 100 years that India is a developed country. Were villages in West Bengal highly prosperous? ). SLB's Devdas is mostly found clean shaved and in neat & clean clothes. Maybe, as I am a non - drinker I may not have the knowledge that whether a drinker ( of Devdas type ) has enough mental stability to keep clean shave and clothes tidy. The direction is good but not in accordance to the calibre of SLB.

ACTING

As usual, Shahrukh Khan mostly did acting with body rather than with face and eyes. I wasn't able to find required amount of pain in his eyes and on face. So as Devdas he can be called an average.

Well, Aishwarya Rai as Paro, I would rate it as below average. I felt as if robot is acting, there are certain instances where I found her face flat which lacked all emotions.

Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi did an above average job but at certain points I felt as if she lacked enthusiasm, she is tired of acting and seems to be performing because its her job.

Jacike Shroff as Chunnilal literally bored me.

The one who excelled on acting front is Kiran Kher ( Paro's mother ). The pain that should be in eyes of a mother can be found in her eyes.

MUSIC

The music of Ismail Darbar has been appreciated but frankly speaking he wasn't able to fascinate me at a single point of time; he used most of his notations repeatedly. Is he trying to walk on the path of Raam Laxman and Anu Malik?

DHRUMAN's TAKE

I received an invitation card which is highly decorative, looks very good, at first instance I got fascinated to it, seems to be costly; but, the date & venue is missing. This is what I felt about the movie. When I left the cinema hall, I had purchased sand in an attractive packet.

I would recommend this movie only to an architect student and for rest whoever has given up their plans of watching the movie, do mail me the 50 percent of money saved, as my fees, just kidding. SLB has been able to bring public to cinema hall but I don't see any repeat value, this is my opinion and so please no controversies because I have heard many commenting it as worth watching.
