Dev-D..............

Unconventional DevDas, with everything from Paro, to Chanda, to sharaab, except set on a backdrop of Aaj ka youth, and with an unconventional "aaj-ke-problems" twist added!

A unique perception and change of style added by Anurag kashyap, churns out an interesting turn to the same old, Devdas story, which is ought to be controversial, would be loved and hated by the audience!

I loved it, in a way and hated it in some!

Credits -

Director - Anurag Kashyap

Music - Amit Trivedi

Cast -

Abhay Deol - Dev

Mahi Gill - Paro

Kalki koechlin - Chanda

Debyendu bhattacharjee - Chunni

Plot -

New age Lover Dev, is a spoilt kid, who loves Paro! After a misunderstanding drifts him away from Paro, he finds himself all curled up with Drugs, Booze and women! When he meets a woman called Chanda, he falls and falls deeply, even though his grudges keep him swaying to-and-from Paro! How he finds his life amongst the anguish love, hate and drugs, is the movie all about!

Things to Like -

a) Abhay Deol, his performance was over the top, the things that would impress even evil critics! His bad-boy characterisation, intensely stunning dialogue delivery, perfect, the star of the movie!

b) New movie-telling style, I mean some camera shots like the one where Dev lands from a drinks table to the bed, (repeated twice on similar lines) were just WOW! The scenes with the 3-performers at the bar, was another unique scene!

c) The songs were short and meaningful, and they dont give you that bored impression after finishing! Funny when in funny situations and intense in intense scenes. Exactly what was needed!

Nayan tarse, still my favorite of the Lot!

d) The new girl Mahi Gill as Paro, was splendid, the scene where she tortures the handpump, to vent her anger , or the scene with the reaction to Dev's repulsion at the roof, were brilliant!

Kalki koechlin, however, was a notch lower as an actor, but did a commendable job! To compliment the grace of Abhay Deol, is pretty hard to achieve and it was!

e) Some interesting scenes, like the one where Dev chews off the ticket of the annoying lady on the bus, or the scene where Dev talks along with the stray dog.. are so supremely executed, that it brings u back to life, out from all the drama happening in the movie!

Things to hate-

Too much scenes pulled in, towards the end! A simple story, was a wee bit complicated with a few unnecessary obscene language and a few real-life incidents, pulled into the story line, to try bringing in the Madhur-Bhandarkar-tadka,which was quite not so required! its a different approach, and should have been all to itself, a lot of dragging of the similar lines of story-telling could bore a lot of the audience!

Some uneasy scenes, F words, and desi swearing, could have u taken aback at times, if you arent used to them!

Interestingly enough, everyone has an unique opinion about this movie, among the 8 of us friends, who watched the movie, 2 liked it a lot, 2 hated it a lot and 4 were partly impressed by the cinematography, songs, performances and a lot of distinct parts of the movie!

I feel, you would have to take a decision as to watch it or not, based on your natural movie-choosing abilities and interests!

A must see for- Conventional movie lovers, who can bear a few painful scenes, and dont start cursing the movie, if it fails to impress you coz of one or two of its flaws, or if you are a fan of intense artistic story-telling and cinematic excellence!

Ignore -If you only want light hearted films, hated "Ek chalis ki last local" and other such awesome flicks, or if you want to enjoy a romantic or masala bolly-flick with your girlfriend, or if you only watch movies where everything is spoon-fed!

Final Verdict- Strictly A, for abusive language and scenes! Not recommended for all, choose a criterion from the above, and if you fall in the former, enjoy the Flick, or else wait for Dilli-6 or Billu-Barber!
