Just bought the Dell XPS 13 Studio laptop yesterday. First impressions are really good. It costs close to Rs. 65, 000/- which is much on the higher side. but it is worth every rupee spent. So here we go!
The lid is covered by a total of 3 diff. components. A high-gloss finished plastic part, a silver aluminium diecast part & black leather. Hence the lid feels best to the touch. Moreover it is also easy to hold as you can have a firm grip due to leather.
The place where you rest your palm is very sensitive to dust and dirt. The case is stable and it is easy to pick the notebook up. The four feet this Dell rests on are very good. the laptop remains fastened on any kind of surface.
There is only 1 standard USB 2.0 port which is very bad considering that you have many things to atatch such as a mouse, a portable hard drive, mobile cable etc. The left side of the laptop provides all important interfaces like HDMI out, digital display port, Gigabit LAN, & VGA out. eSATA & Firewire is also available. You also have a slot -in -drive, a DVD-RW drive at this moment.
Blue Ray is not available when I had asked them for an upgrade. It does not have a fingerprint reader but it does have a face recognition software. it does not work very well in porr light conditions and ideal light conditions are not really available all the time so it is better to stick with password login rather than face recognition.
Dell has designed a special keyboard for this Studio XPS notebook. It has a wonderful striking surface design and a special font. It is really flat but it is very good to use. The keys are illuminated which is another good feature. the light can be seen thro' the keys so it is easier to type even in the dark.
As I mentioned earlier in the Cons, the laptop heats very fast. so I dont think you can really put it on your lap and work. The temperature I thinks reaches to almost 35 to 40 degrees celcius which is quite high and it gets rather inconvenient. But you can sort this out by using the convinient 4 fans table attachment which is available in most of the computer shops.
Battery life is close to 3 to 3.5 hours for normal viewing and internet browsing. You can in any case switch off the NVIDIA support for better battery backup. For me I use Pro-E, AutoCad 09, and Solid Works all the time so I could never switch off the graphics card. For me the battery lasted for 2 & 1/2 hours which is okay but you might need to have more. Unfortunatley Dell offers only 6 cells battery and not a one with 9 cells.
The new XPS 13 studio is an excellent laptop. It has very high performance, good graphics card, sound is okay, the finish is superb, it looks amazing so it is worth the price. After all it is 13 incher, slim and flat and it offers excellent mobility.The Dell Studio XPS 13 is a good product which offers sophistication. Buy it! if you are one of those who will indulge in appreciating every design detail.
