I purchased my Dell Inspiron 6000 in 2005, Aug in USA. I must tell Dell laptops were in rage at that time as I found many of my indian friends recommending dell laptop.
After couple of years of use, the LID of the laptop became loose. I checked with couple of other who had this laptop. They also said that they are facing the same issue. It seemed that the DELL la ptop has this common issue, so just beware before purchasing dell laptop.
I did not face any other issue for nearly 5 years, but on Dec, 2010 I found the LCD screen of my laptop not working. I went to the Dell laptop service centre in Domlur, Bangalore. they told me that it would cost Rs 14, 000 with 2 year warranty and 12, 000 without any warranty. I got it replaced and my laptop again came back to life.
But again one day I found that my laptop did not switch on. Nearly 6 months had passed by then. I took it to the service center again and they told me that the Mother board is burnt and needs replacement. It would cost around 8000. I told them I have just spent 14, 000 on LCD and I would have to spend 8000 again. On this the service center guy advised that a laptop has life of 5 years max, so better go for a new laptop. This was really annoying from a person from Dell suggesting that you should buy a new laptop every 5 years. That was ridiculous. He further said that mother board for this model is not available as it is 5 year old model, so I should better call the customer care for this. In a way he was trying to persuade me to give up on this old laptop and go for a new one.
The customer care of Dell is another story. They, I believe, are the busiest persons on earth. Each time I have called them, I have to wait at least 10-15 mins before I could reach any one. And every single time they would ask me the model number of the laptop and the problem, but as soon they hear the problem they would say that they are busy with high volume of work and ask me to call later. It has happened for at least 3 times. If they are so busy then why are they asking for the laptop model number and problem, and when they know that the laptop is old they would simply avoid responding to the call citing various ludicrous reasons.
Probably Dell has this strategy to make people buy a new laptop every 5 years. But I swear that I would never ever buy a dell laptop again and would advise every possible one against doing so.
