Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra strikes back with Junior B in Delhi 6. Precisely, Abhishek Bachchan has come back with a heart wrenching performance after Guru, under Rakyesh’s purview in Delhi 6. Though I cannot be sure if it will be included as part of the bests of 2009, but surely Junior Bachchan will pick up some awards for his performance in the film.

Though like papa Bachchan am little apprehensive as from critics it has got mixed reaction but surely enough this is one of the few good movies that will strike the box office in 2009. Of course a must watch for all. Delhi 6, based on the life of people living in old Delhi, speaks about their prejudices, falsification of the term co-existence and then retaliating with glory to a wholesome integrity.

It also shows pitfalls of “galli” life in old Delhi but has never quite underestimated authenticity of the native beliefs in terms of negativity.

The story begins: Waheeda Rehman is detected with a killer tumor in United States where she was staying with her son’s family. After the detection, she realizes that her days are counted and wishes to return to her soil.

Her grandson Roshan (Abhishek) takes the responsibility to bring her home and visits India for the first time. His journey from Indira Gandhi International Airport till the bylanes of Old Delhi mesmerizes him and the austerity amazes his senses.

Though surprised at every second, he ultimately falls in love with the place. Gradually he wins all their hearts and becomes a charming and bankable next door neighbor who has grit and authority and an inner vision to comprehend life.

But as luck would have it, time comes when he gets away from the normalcy of life and eventually gets toned with the odd prejudices of the people living there. So much so that he became the pivot of all the ritualistic strife and the religious agony of the area.

All the misunderstanding around him however do not degrade his inner mission and he still fights back to make peace with life and preach about truth and inner conscious to others. And finally as Indian audience would like it Director Mehra works out a strategy to make it a happy ending one with lots of positivist.

Ironically this added fervor does not go well with the need of the Plot and ushers a downbeat element. At times, death and pain becomes more realistic…though I can understand that may be Mehra after Rang De Basanti was keen on not making this film stigmatic with death of the Protagonist but definitely with Abhishek’s death at the end , the film would have become an absolute best and could have earned acclaim from all round.

Such a nice film with a fairy tale ending was not expected. However apart from a tinge of negativity the film has a heart filled with intellect and much to give to the audience. Rehman once again was very authentic and truthful towards the plot.

Characterization and narrative was almost an extension of Rang De Basanti Gharana with intermingling of practical daily life and the eutopia around. Overall I am tempted to give a 4 out of 5 score to the film and full marks to Junior Bachchan. Sonam Kapoor was sweet and charming and Waheeda Rehman is as classical as always. Other than that Om Puri, Supriya Pathak and others were simply superb.

Truly speaking I liked it despite its flawed end and would highly recommend you to go and watch it at least once, if not more. Hence dive deep with Delhi 6 and get happy with the unconventional journey into Indian filmmaker's mind.
