I Belong to Dehradun and have spend 20 years of my childhood and adult life at that place. Ofcourse it is my Fav places:-). Temprature and Climate wise Dehradun has changed a lot. I remember as a small kid we use to have RAINY DAY holidays as during monsoon it used to rain there for weeks, I really love rain, but all that has sadly gone now:-(. With the formation of UTTARANCHAL the ecological balance of that state has been disturbed.
Goverment has given some tax benifits for setting up companies and everything has gone bad. In my childhood I never remember summers, it remained cool throughout summers and cold in winters. But now temperatures go upto 40 degrees in June - July.
Best time to visit Dehradun is May-June. I always remember comming back from summers in Delhi in a bus to dehradun and I use to sleep besides the window. Reaching RAJA JI national park(which surrounds dehradun) I used to feel COOL and FRESH air and I use to say to myself, I have reached home, GOD I miss it now, we have destroyed all of it.
Dehradun inspite of a tourist place is not connected by AIR. You have to FLY to DELHI and then use RAOD or RAILWAYS to reach Dehradun. It takes 6-7 hours to reach Dehradun from delhi.
You have to visit SAHASTRADHARA, amazing place, you can see water comming from inside of mountains! Then Roberts Cave(GUCCHU PANI), also my fav place to spend time in summer. Then there is a stream here you can take bath and enjoy river water at LACHIWALA. It is on way to HARIDWAR from Dehradun.
Now there are lots of hotels and accomodations that have come up, after Dehradun becoming capital of Uttaranchal.
Then there is Tapkeswar, a place myst visit.
Mussourie, sometimes referred as queen of hill stations is 30 mins drive from Dehradun. Once a beautifull place is destroyed by hotel industry. I relly loved it, you need to get warm clothes in SUMMER(JULY), ahhh where are the old good days!
You must visit GUN HILL and if you are energetic then do a tracking from dehradun to mussourie(we used to do that a lot in our child hood:-), I am not sure whether that tracking route is still there or not.
WE should take care of enviroment and do something for it if possible, otherwise we may end up givning nothing to our comming generations!
