Sachin = Saif ?!

Originality:

It's ironic how celebrities from different fields can be so similar.

Although their family backgrounds are as similar as chalk and cheese, these two celebrities have plenty in common. Both of them are fair enough to pass off as foreigners. Equally popular with the fairer sex, the two even endorse a common soft drink. Their names begin with 'S' and both of them have married a woman who is elder to them. If you haven't deduced whom I'm talking about, go and watch MPKDH. You deserve to be tortured.

Saif Ali Khan and Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar sure have a lot in common. Here is another similarity - the duo lend their favourite phrases to the debut album of my favourite band - Oasis.

''Well, definitely, I was surprised, but definitely, the team comes first definitely.''

''Pooja? Maybe. Priya? Er ... maybe. Christine? Maybe! Kiss ko kiss karoon?''

Definitely Maybe. - Oasis certainly have to thank Sachin and Saif for the inspiration behind the title of their debut album.

Oasis were first formed in 1991 under the name 'The Rain'. When Liam Gallagher's elder brother Noel stepped into the band, he assumed its leadership as the lead guitarist and song writer. Noel renamed the band as 'Oasis'. Quite rightly so, as the band have been churning out great rock music in an era when rock is dead. Almost.

Noel may be suffering from dyslexia, but there is no doubting his songwriting abilities. Their lyrical works have been varied - with song themes ranging from romantic to maverick. However, their first album 'Definitely Maybe', unlike its successor 'Morning Glory', is laden with a plethora of attitude and spunk. Maverick to the core, inspirations from the style of bands like the Rolling Stones is apparent. 'Definitely Maybe' is definitely relentless rock and roll at its best.

What's commendable is that inspite of this album being heavier than the successive ones, it isn't a case of bang-bang-bang. The songs aren't monotonous with constant drumming and heavy guitaring, which other bands are guilty of.

------------------------------------

Rock 'n' Roll Star is quite similar to most other Oasis songs. A rock 'n' roll base and Liam Gallagher's sneering vocals. The lyrics illustrate the desire of breaking out - nothing special, but catchy stuff.

Rating: 7/10.

Shakermaker is a song which was amidst plenty of controversy as Coca-Cola had sued the band for directly lifting the melody and a few words of their jingle. Although it does not boast of originality, this track is brilliant. Completely different from the previous number, there is added use of the chorus and the tempo is a trifle slower. The lyrics aren't anything to crow about and Liam continues to sneer, but the things to watch out for in this track are the exquisite leads and drums.

Rating: 8.5/10.

Live Forever is amazingly rendered by Gallagher. An interesting beginning with the drums dominating before the electric guitar takes over adds to the effect of this amazingly rendered number. The lyrics are topclass and this song is one of Oasis' best. Watch out for the stunning interlude piece of guitaring!

I think you’re the same as me.We see things they’ll never see.You and I are gonna live forever.

Now is not the time to cry, now is the time to find out why ...

Rating: 10/10.

Up In The Sky is a breeze with Gallagher displaying some great vocal skills. The rythm may sound a little monotonous, but then, you cannot have perfection every time, can you?

Rating: 7/10.

Columbia has one of the most amazing beginnings I have heard. Although I cannot identify the instruments used, the introduction is exotic, alright. Great lyrics are a feature of this number and the music is fantastic, too.

This is confusion am I confusing you ?

Rating: 9/10.

Supersonic is, well, supersonic. A fantastic song with some great riffs and great vocals. Lyrics aren't special, but the riffs make up for it. The piece of guitaring is the piece de resistance of this wonderful song.

Rating: 9.5/10.

Bring It On Down inclines towards hard rock. The drums dominate along with heavy guitaring and Gallagher displays some great voice modulations.

You think they're talking 'bout you but you don't know who ...

Rating: 8.5/10.

Cigarettes And Alcohols does not boast of being original as its opening riff is plagiarized from a song by T-Rex. Yet, Gallagher's fantastic vocals and appropriate lyrics enhance the song. I personally love the closing riffs of this song.

Is it my imagination or have I finally found something worth living for? I was looking for some action, but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol.

Digsy's Dinner is one of the most comically-written songs Gallagher has penned. Completely mindless and the riffs may not be anything special, yet, one cannot deny that the song has an extremely catchy beat.

Rating: 7/10.

Slide Away is the perfect example of a song which has everything. Good music, good lyrics and great vocals. The solo between the stanzas is brilliant.

Let me be the one that shines with you in the morning when you don't know what to do.

Rating: 8.5/10.

Married With Children may have kiddish lyrics, but is significant, being the only acoustic number in the album. I personally feel that Oasis are much better while dealing with slow songs played on the acoustic six-string and this song is an illustration of the fact. The vocals are a surprise, sounding very different from the characteristic Oasis sneer, yet the song is well-sung.

Rating: 9.5/10.

'Definitely Maybe' boasts of some songs which are definitely great and others which are maybe, but not quite. It may not be a patch on its successor 'Morning Glory', but it remains an impressive debut effort. I strongly recommend it, especially for the numbers Live Forever, Supersonic and Married With Children.
