Director milan luthria's last directorial venture, from 2004 it did average business at the box, office at the time I was visiting india and couldn't miss this sanjay dutt movie, watched it the first day and just loved it. Milan luthria is the same director who gave us movie like kache dhagge starring saif, ajay devgan which was a an average movie and chori chori with ajay devgan and rani was a flop.
I don't get it, why do they make pak and india movies, where they have to fight that causes more hatred between pak and india. The movie stars Sanjay dutt, amitabh, akshay khana, tanuj, amrita rao and kay kay
This movie is based on indopakistani war of 1971, december 3 1971, war broke out between and pakistan and india. At the end of the war 92,000 paksitani soliders returned home and 60,000 thousand indian defense personal returned home, but 54 india soliders remained missing, they stay in pakistani jail.
Amitabh (major ranveer) and many of his men are captured in by the pakisrtani army in 1971 war and kept in prison. They are beaten up everday and the indian army and even the indian government have forgotten about them.
They try to escape and a lot of times, but many are killed in the process. gaurav(akshay khanna) son of major ranveer sets off a mission to rescue his father by going to pakistan himself, because the government won't agree to help them. Ranveer's wife (tanuja) also doesnot want her son gaurav to go to pakistan and get into trouble, but without telling gaurav leaves for his misson.
Gaurav reaches pakistan and stays at house of a pakistani hindi jabbar (akhilendra mishra) and falls in love with his daughter radhika (amrita rao). Jabbar helps him a lot and meanwhile major ranveer and his men are transfered to a different prison. The new jailor of the jail is (kay kay).Major ranveer and his men make a plan to run away from the prison and they are caught and lot of them die. Only one prisoner escapes khan (sanjaydutt) but he is not in the same group of major he;'s anti social inmate. Khan escapes and is saved by gaurav, there gaurav finds out that is father is alive.
Together khan and gaurav make a plan, they steal a map of the prison and make a plan, khan gets arrested and goes back to prison and discusses the plan to how to escape from the jail. There major ranveer finds out that his son gaurav is in pakistan as well.
Suddenly major, khan and and the rest of the men realise that one of the guy in the group named jatin kumar isnt indian he is a pakistani soldier in disguise. They pre pone the plan and escape a day early from the jail.
The planning of the escape and the chase after are quite gripping, but I thought there was no need of the romantic track between akshay and amrita rao. Deewar could have been a hit if the story had been prestened more hard hitting the director tries overexpose the attitude of the pakistani officers and shows that the indian prisoners are heroes. BUt deewar is milan luthria's fine work till date he is a very good technician. The film is very stylish.
The cinematography is pretty good and action scenes by tinu verma are well executed. The music by aadesh shrivastava is pretty good marhaba marhaba by sonu nigam is sung well, a lot of money is spent on the set and the song is pictursed on one and only sanjubaba wearing salweer kameez.
The performances- akshay khanna does a good job he proves yet again is he one gifted actor, but still he isn't match to his father vinod khanna, but does a good job in the role given.
Amitabh as the prisoner and gives splended and power pack performance, but when amitabh talks his voice has creaks, you can see the oldness in his voice, since amitabh his age the role suits him, thank god he isn't doing what he did in boom.
Kay kay as the evil jailor is great, and makes you hate him, he should become a regular villain for hindi movies.
amrita rao has nothing to do except sing a few songs with akshay khanna, but she is okay in the part where her father dies.
akhilendra mishra standout with a nice performance as well.
deewar is a sanjay dutt show all the way, the movie is boring in the starting, because most of the time the jaill is shown, as soon as baba enters the camera comes to comedy, funny liner like KHAN hun allah ki shaan, and the dialogue kiyon be langdey kya dekh raha hai. People simply loved his performance in this movie. He simply overshadows akshay khanna and bachnan in many scenes. He is just great and the sawlkameer really suits him. He was also nominated for best supporting actor for this film. Hisd comedy timing is perfect though this is a serious film but he stunns you with his comedy.
