Recently, we have seen many movies which are based on the relations of India and Pakistan. Films like ?LOC-Kargil?, ?Main Hoon Na?(the mission milaap track) and ?Lakshya?(Kargil war was shown, in the whole second half of the film), are all the examples of such recent releases. Another film which can be included in this category is ?Deewaar?, in which there isn`t any war shown, nor is there any discussion about India and Pakistan`s relationship, but it shows that how the Indian prisoners suffer in Pakistan.

The subject is interesting and the star cast of the film is also excellent, but will this thing affect the movie that already the viewers have seen many action movies based on the India-Pakistan and Hindu-Muslim(?Dev? is an example) issue? That has to be seen?.

THE FILM:

V.R Pictures ?Deewaar?, produced by Vinod Doshi and directed by Milan Luthria stars Amitabh Bachchan,Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Amrita Rao, Tanuja, Raj Zutshi, Kay Kay, Raghuvir Yadav and Akhilendra Mishra. This film is one of the most awaited film of the year. This is also Amitabh Bachchan`s second film called ?Deewaar?. He has previously also done a film with the same title, which was a turning point in his career and a great success. How much successful will be this ?Deewaar??

THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:

1.Major Ranvir Kaul(Amitabh Bachchan): Major Ranvir Kaul is a brave and a courageous person, who loves his country. He has been imprisoned in Pakistan, since 33 years but his love for his country is still the same.Amitabh Bachchan, gives his best performance in the year 2004. He reminds you of the same energetic angry young man,who was in the previous ?Deewaar?. This was a very difficult role to play, indeed and an experienced and a brilliant actor such as Amitabh Bachchan can only play such a role. The character of Major Ranvir Kaul, who has suffered so much in life but still tries to stop himself from crying, could have only been played by Big B. He has understood the character so well, that no one else could have understand this character. The way he shows the pain and sorrow in this characters` eyes, is praiseworthy. Also, his dialogue delivery is excellent. This is one performance to watch out for!

2.Gaurav(Akshaye Khanna):Gaurav is the son of Major Ranvir Kaul who is the only support for his helpless mother. He goes to Pakistan to find out and rescue is father.Akshaye Khanna, once again after giving excellent performances in films such as ?Dil Chahta Hai? and ?Humraaz?,shines in this film. This is one such performance that he will be proud of, during his lifetime. The actor has really given a breakthrough performance. He excels in the scene where he tells his mother that though he is weak, unlike his father, still he is brave. He is a very natural actor and plays the role of Gaurav without going overboard,at all. This is one of his memorable performances.Let`s hope that we get to see more of him,in future.

3.Khan(Sanjay Dutt): Khan is a very relaxed and a chilled person. He is one such character whom no one can understand. He is a very selfish person who doesn`t care about anyone, nor even his own country. He takes advantage of each circumstances. He just cares about himself, only and nobody else.Sanjay Dutt as the very cool, yet daring Khan,is brilliant. Throughout the film, he remains humorous making the bored audiences (who may get bored of so many fights), interested in the film. After ?Munnabhai M.B.B.S?, he is back in the complete form and his fans are surely going to love him as Khan in this film.

Amrita Rao does something which any other actress could have done. There is no big deal in looking beautiful and dancing in the rain-and that`s exactly what she does. The hideous dogs in this film have a lengthier role than her. Akhilendra Mishra, does a good job but I wonder why he always has the face expression of a bull dog,on his face, throughout the film. Never mind! Kay Kay in his villainous act,who has imprisoned the Indians, does a wonderful job.Tanuja as Gaurav`s mother is fantastic! In her introduction scene where she is holding a mike and questioning the policemen, she is excellent!

THE STORY:

The film revolves around the Indian prisoners in Pakistan, who have been imprisoned since 33 years. One of the prisoners is Major Ranvir Kaul, whom the Pakistanis hate the most because of his bravery and courage. All the prisoners are very adly treated. They are severely beaten and for many days they remain hungry. Major Ranvir Kaul`s wife keeps on waiting for her husband and she has placed his photo,in her room. (Young Amitabh Bachchan`s photo). She tries to convince the policemen or army men to go to Pakistan for rescuing the prisoners, but she receives no help from them. One day she receives the letter of Major Ranvir Kaul, in which he writes about the problems he is going through. At that time,Major Ranvir kaul`s son Gaurav decides to go to Pakistan to get his father rescued. While Major Ranvir is imprisoned, a new prisoner, named Khan, joins him there. Whether Khan is an Indian or a Pakistani, nobody knows. One day, he escapes from the clutches of the Pakistanis and meets Gaurav. Khan begins to live with Gaurav and then, Gaurav takes help from Khan to get his father rescued from the Pakistanis.

THE WORK OF THE CREW:

Milan Luthria who has earlier directed ?Kachche Dhaage? is back again with an excellent film. He succeeds, as a director. The going-ons in the film succeed to keep the interest of the viewers alive, throughout. He has managed to extract amazing performances from his star cast. There are many interesting scenes in this film. The first scene of the film, where Major Ranvir is sitting in a van and burns one of the policemen,is very interesting and shocking,as well. Another scene which is very interesting is the one where Gaurav is going to Pakistan and in the train one Pakistani comes to know about his nationality, and he fights with him but ends up dying with his head separated from his body. The scene where the prisoners escape and the dogs follow Khan, is a nail-biting sequence. The scenes between Gaurav and Khan are also very interesting and the climax is also very well shot. Screenplay is gripping and though there is lots of violence in this film, the interest of the viewers still is there towards the film. Sridhar Raghavan and Gaurang Doshi, who have written the script of the film, have done their job well. They have left no stone unturned in making the every bit of this film, interesting. There are many well-written sequences.
