Those Wonder Years!
Jun 15, 2001 11:25 PM 2461 Views

This is certainly a very interesting topic to write on. I was first confused as to what actually was supposed to be conveyed. But after reading jilmil's and couple of other's review on this topic, I thought maybe I could also pen down some words on the same. I wont be writing in general, but rather I will concentrate on the college/hostel perspective of the topic. Since I just graduated just 7 months ago, I can fairly recount some lessons which I have learnt through my journey of four years in college. I hope people do find it useful.

'Pursue what youwant'

In my first year of engineering, all the subjects were common to all branches. It still is! But the trouble started for a lot of my friends in the second year, when everybody had to go to their respective departments. A awful

lot of them were either dis-satisfied or not really interested in their field. This happens many a times. Just because people score brilliantly in their pre-college, 12th or board exams, students tend to go in those lines of education which is hot at the moment, without realizing whether they really enjoy it. A friend of mine pursued electronics and communications, without really having any interest in it, and ended up having a very tough time in the department, and eventually failing too. So my first suggestion to avoid any further blunders is to make a wise choice at the first step itself.

'impression counts'

Whatever people say or do, and however a professor/lecturer says, your first impressioncounts on him/her counts. A 'impression' helps to get that 'added effect' while getting marks. I have seen many students who had good impressions on their Sirs and Madams, which eventually got them several more marks than they usually would have got...and it matters! Also on this note, I would also say, never try to 'Over-Impress' your peers, u might land in deeper ditch! Making an impression is easy, but its difficult to carry on with that impression. Once an impression is created, its unlikely that one will face tough times in the department! But yeah...don't do anything which will take away or spoil away the impression. It could lead to negative results. I have learnt from these four years that ' Your first impression is the best impression, but your last impression is the one that stays.' So once a impression is made, one should try to carry on with it as long as possible.

'You and you alone are responsible for whatever happens with you.'

There are lots of times that students go through a unfair phase with their peers and professors. A lot of times, students are innocent too, but it is not accepted by the sirs/professors in the colleges. Remember friends, there is no use getting angry at them. I might seem very pessimistic by telling this, but this is the stark truth that you are at their mercy.Follow the managerial rule of telling 'Yes Sir' to whatever the professor says!! Think of your future goals and act accordingly. One foolish step, which might have been done with good intentions can lead to a lot of trouble in college. A friend of mine has this nasty habit of proving himself right in front of professors, and even went to the extent of having a argument with professor over the same; and ended up having bad marks in it. I don't say, all of them are like that, but in a professional college, one can expect many people to be like that.

' Enjoy Canteen...Enjoy Bunking!'

College days, once over never come back. I strictly believe that one should bunk classes!! I know it might not jell with my above statements, but once in a while its okay! Bunking is a rare pleasure which you can have only in college and nowhere else!! Canteen is a great place to communicate too. You might probably end up having more fun in the canteen than in the classrooms but its okay!. We enjoyed canteens thoroughly, and believe it was in the canteen that I learnt the tricks of the trade about department and professors!! It could be place your problems could get solved.Enjoy the canteen the most, for you may not get such a atmosphere again in your life. It could be the place to go when the going gets tough!!!

'Better part of college life is spent saying 'its too early'...and then ' its too late.''

Its the most common thing to happen to more than 90% of the students. This is one of the tough lessons I learnt from my college life. A few people belonged to what we called 'hard-working' guys...and we belonged to the 'hardly-working' group! We started studying seriously for exams only during the last 20 days or so....we would get good results...but believe me, by

the next semester began, we would have forgotten most of what we studied last semester!..and this is a common phenomena. I would say that students should maintain a healthy balance between studies and other stuff! Never postpone a thing to the last moment, and end up being too late to actually do anything about it. A thing once postponed is as good as not done. We would always decide that we would study from coming monday...which never came! And yeah, try to retain some knowledge of what you studied through out...it might help some here in life!

'Hostel life is enjoyable...until u don' t fall in the trap'

Hostel life is indeed very enjoyable. A lot of students face tough times when hey come to new place to study. First things which happens is making friends. Remember friends, college friends are not school friends and vice versa. There is a great deal of difference between the two. Hostel life also gives freedom to students which might be used in the negative way too. Many people get so high on freedom that they end up suffering with it. There are a lot of guys/gals who fall in the wrong company, take up to boozing, smoking and all that. Ragging too is one problem which many people face in the first year. Taken sportingly it could work wonders, else it could prove the reverse. One makes a lot of friends during this period...One may not enjoy the ragging experience, but it always stays as a memorable moment in one's lives! Hostel life might just

give friends which last through out one's life.

Well these are some of the points which I would mention recalling about my just passed college life. Today after graduating, I feel that I have learnt a lot of things in life, in the college years. I would love to go back to them any day to learn whatever I missed during my college days. Today I do realize that 'I still have a lot to learn.'

Thanks for reading this...hope you guys will come out with something on the same topic!
