There are some things everyone expects before heading to watch a superhero film. The tragic backstory, the damsel in distress, the battle between good and evil and the conflicted but well-intentioned hero who saves the day. If you thought these tropes will help you figure out Deadpool, think again. He may be super, but he’s no hero.Wade Wilson ( Ryan Reynolds) , a former Special Forces operative, meets Vanessa Carlysle ( Morena Baccarin) while he works as a mercenary.

They fall in love, and things start looking up in his otherwise bleak life. And then he is diagnosed with multiple organ cancer. Fortunately, Wade is offered a cure – one that will not only heal him, but also give him powers that other men wish for. But every cure comes at a price. In Wade’s case, the price he must pay is looking completely unf* #% able. What follows is the search for the only doctor that can make him look normal again and, in turn, help him get the girl.

Right from the cheeky opening credits, it becomes obvious that Deadpool isn’t your run-of-the-mill Marvel movie. The film takes every comic book movie stereotype and turns it on its head. But that’s not all. Deadpool also makes it a point to mock every cliche that is in the very film. Nothing is safe from his ire, right from Deadpool’s biggest nemesis, Wolverine, to Ryan Reynolds’ acting ability! The result is a hilarious film that breaks the fourth wall ( and on occasion, the sixteenth wall) and makes self-referential humor trendy again.

Though he may not have made a great Green Lantern ( which this film acknowledges) , Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. He effortlessly delivers one zinger after another, doing full justice to the Merc with a Mouth. It also helps that he’s backed by a great supporting cast, which most notably includes Ed Skrein, Morena Baccarin and Brianna Hildebrand.

Deadpool may not be a typical superhero movie, but it does have the high-octane action to be one. The film features some of the most thrilling ( and often, amusing) action sequences we’ve seen in years. It is also unapologetically gory and realistic ( at least as realistic as a science fiction film gets) . Combine these action-packed scenes with the film’sremarkable OST and you have a movie that can be enjoyed by both comic book fans and people who are indifferent to superhero culture.

That being said, the film might turn off the faint of heart. It features gratuitous crotch shots, crass humor and a whole lot of gore. If you’re looking for a conventional superhero movie, Deadpool might not be the right choice. But if you’re looking for something different but equally entertaining, don’t miss this one.

Why You Should Watch this Movie:

Deadpool is the perfect movie to help you get over blockbuster fatigue. It features one of Ryan Reynolds’ best performances to date, combined with meta humor and a great soundtrack. Give Deadpool a chance, even if you aren’t a fan of comic book adaptations.
