The Dax V90 Fax/Data/Voice modem is a quiet and dependable modem. I have owned one for the last 3 years or so, and I bought this modem because of the exceptional reviews it received in the PC-Quest and Chip Magazines. It has been specially designed to give a rock solid connection under Indian phone line conditions ( though subsequently other brands also did give this feature) Also, because of it's 1 yr replace/3 year repair warranty and the fact that it is a problem-free modem, it is an exceptional buy. Conversely, it's equivalent internal modem is not any great shakes. I prefer an external modem because it helps in finding out how fast the net is at any given time, just by looking at the Receive Data LED. Also, it's 9 LED panel helps in error diagnosing. When I bought this modem, I bought it expressly because it is compatible with Linux.

Most external modems are, but it is better to buy one which is stated as being compatible with Unices. Also, you can cut out that irritating dial-up screech by just plugging in a headphone jack into the external speaker socket ! Even If I connect to the net for 5-6 hours at a stretch, I rarely get disconnected. And even though an external modem is much costlier than an internal modem, it is safer, because in case of a telephone line surge( not as rare as you might think), only the modem might get screwed. Whereas in an internal modem, because it is directly connected through the motherboard, you just might lose everything ! This has happened to a friend of mine ! I'd advise any one who is looking for net connectivity to go in for a dax modem. You won't regret it !
