I will be the first to admit that I thought the television show Dawson's Creek was too childish to watch. I mean they aim the show at teens, right? My sister, who is 26 years old, is a regular viewer and convinced me to try it out. It was summertime and there were only repeats on TV anyway, so I decided to watch it and see what it was all about.

After watching a few episodes I was hooked. The characters are great. They have interesting story lines and an intelligent dialogue. Their stories provide real problems in teenage life. They do this in a most realistic way. They have family issues, sex issues, friendship issues and most importantly self issues. These concerns come up in not only teenage lives, but as adults also.

Here is some background on the characters.

Dawson Leery - Played by James Van Der Beek. Dawson is almost 18 years old. His first love is Joey Potter. He believes that they are 'soul mates' and just recently started to stop obsessing about this when he started dating Gretchen, Pacey's sister. Dawson and Pacey were best friends from child hood until Pacey fell in love with Joey. Dawson has taken a back burner this season while the show focuses more on Pacey and Joey.

Pacey Witter - I have to say that Joshua Jackson, who portrays Pacey, is my favorite. He's the one who gets me to tune in each week. His story started with a fling with a teacher of his. This progressed to sex relationships with other girls in his high school. He's the bad boy who did not have too many cares in the world until he realized he was in love with Joey. They sailed on his boat for 3 months last summer. This ruined his friendship with Dawson, but he considered it worth it.

Joey Potter - Played by Katie Holmes. Her character is considered the most virginal on all of TV. She gets straight A's and has a good moral code. After her Mom died she and her sister Bessie took over the family bed and breakfast. She is the complete opposite of her boyfriend, Pacey.

Jen Lindley - Played by Michelle Williams. Jen is the bad girl who moved to the fictional town of Capeside, MA because her parents couldn't handle her anymore. She moved in with her Grandmother and attempts to change her lifestyle.

Jack McPhee - Played by Kerr Smith. This is the guy in high school struggling with his sexuality. His father kicked him out of their house when he 'came out of the closet.' After years of heartache they reconciled. Jack has faced all sorts of discrimination on the show from not be able to bring a same sex date to the prom to getting fired from coaching a little league soccer team. It makes the viewer think of the real life teens who face these problems.

Andie McPhee - Played by Meredith Monroe. Andie is Jack's sister. She has had her share of problems too. Pacey was her first boyfriend and was there for her when she began suffering from mental illness. She was put into a hospital and now maintains her illness through medication. While in this hospital she cheated on Pacey which ended their relationship. Meredith Monroe left the show this season, but will still be making guest appearances.

This was a break down of the 6 major characters on the show. Dawson's Creek is nothing at all like Beverly Hills 90210, far from it. They deal with real life issues. If you like shows such as the new hit Once and Again, Then DC might just be for you. The characters are just younger. If these actors didn't have talent then they wouldn't be sought after for feature films. They have all been making movies and some of them are quite good. Try Dawson's Creek out, you may surprise yourself and actually like this show, I sure do!

Enjoy!
