I discovered Davidoff’s Cool Water Eau De Toilette spray about four years ago and it immediately replaced Ralph Lauren's Polo as my favorite after-shave and fresher. The odor is similar to Polo, but there are hints of Rosemary, lavender, pine and citrus that linger on my skin and clothes. There is nothing so wonderful as putting on a sweater or a silk scarf that has picked up some of the odor and getting a whiff of it to remind me why I like it so much.

I like the color and design of the bottle. There is a nice heft to it in my hand and it sparkles on its glass shelf in the bathroom. I’ve managed to find some other accessories that match the deep blue-green of this handsome, masculine-looking bottle. I usually buy the 4.2 (125 ml) fluid ounce bottle as I feel that at the $40-plus American dollars I pay for it (depending on where I buy it) gives me more value for my money. That way I don’t feel guilty if I’m a bit more lavish after a shower and shave for my personal enjoyment than I would be if I were just going out for the evening.

I also enjoy this scent more in the spring and summer months than I do during the fall when the weather begins to turn brisk and the winds are blowing off of Lake Michigan. I find it particularly refreshing after being on the beach or in the sun for the day. I go with friends to a clothing optional (nude) beach along the Wisconsin River. It’s inland about 150 miles from where I live in Milwaukee and a long weekend there with friends is most enjoyable.

After we return from the beach and go to our motel and take a shower and a rest, a clean pair of shorts, a wonderfully soft cashmere sweater and a liberal spray of this after-shave seem to be a requirement before going out to eat somewhere. As we walk back to our rooms after eating I can still smell the herbs and spices that make up this cologne floating against the night air.

I rarely use Cool Water during the winter months, preferring instead, an expensive bottle of Guerlain’s Heritage cologne that was given to me as a gift. The smoky aromas seem better suited for the colder months. It also seems to go better with corduroy, tweeds and sweaters. Even better, I like my bottle of Hermès Eau de Cologne that I got in New York City in 1996. It’s almost empty and it’s almost time to go back for a refill. I know could get it here or in Chicago, but the trip would be a good excuse to visit my old haunts and visit friends.

Each person’s body chemistry makes them react differently to the components of a cologne or after-shave. I have friends who think that the smell of Esteé Lauder’s Aramis cologne is just wonderful, but it just doesn’t work on me; the odor is not attractive. For a refreshing and lasting experience, try a spray of Davidoff’s Cool Water Eau De Toilette the next time you want an exciting change.
