Dasavatharam - A review. Review on Dasavatharam Movie

Dasavatharam . is a pure entertainer . and nothing else

Its a film thats just good, exceptional in grandeur, extraordinary in technical expertise and performance.

As a Kamal film, it doesnt impact and its nowhere near a Virumandi, Thevar Magan, Indian, let alone a Mahanadi or Anbesivam . and not even the effervescent Avvai Shanmugi.

Rest guaranteed that the movie is absolutely enjoyable, but as a hardcore kamal fan, I find it disappoining that the movie focusses too much and is laid upon a screenplay with apparent imperfections underneath .

Dr.Govind(Kamal) is a scientist researching on bio weapons in US. He is allured with a lucrative offer to sell a sample used for research purposes, he declines and fearing the exposure of sample, which might kill millions, tries to safeguard it. He is pursued menacingly still by another Kamal, an american - hired assasin, Fletcher(kamal again), and turn of circumstances force him to fly unknowingly to India, along with this sample. The assasin too flies all the way for him and there the story expands with furthermore kamals all in sometimes absurd and sometimes brilliant means being part of the incidents to unfold . then there is a Japanese(kamal again) pursuing the party wanting to avenge his daughter's murder. there are no plausible connections between those initial events with the vaishnavite(Kamal) and all these happenings.

Few of the roles are like caricatures to look at. the make up is artificial and especially the Muslim role. I get reminded of the look of that villain in "The mask " after he wears the mask. He is supposed to be taller, so much for spl effects that half the time people endup staring well above his head. In one of the scenes in a long shot his head appears larger than rest of his body . And to mention the old woman also . its a horrible sight in closeup.

Asin is an absolute irritant. with all her high throated squeaks and squalls. well after sometime I started dreading arrival of her scenes in the movie . then there are some supposed to be humorous quips, quite often hampering the pace of the movie.

The way the Punjabi kamal recovers from his cancer is an absolute scream. we had a hearty laugh recollecting it sometime after coming out of the movie hall.

Well the movie did get a little serious sometime towards the climax. The stunt sequence between Fletcher and the Japanese is worth mentioning. And to mention all the intense technical expertise whenever the kamals appear in group.

But it all goes way down on watching the legend in action. The voice modulation and work of the slang, the body language and facial expressions by kamal for all these characters, to specially mention the diction and accent Kamal has worked on for the Bush and Fletcher roles. only kamal can do it. and for all his offscreen efforts for the research he has done, right from the tussles between the saivites and vaishnavites in the early 12th century chola reigns, bio weapons, chaos theory or the butterfly effect.

I have never seen such a magnificient "Olympia" portrayed, my office complex in Guindy, in the initial chase and stunt sequences between Govind and Fletcher.

I just cant stop wondering how the team can afford to make a lot of compromises . all the imperfect makeup, sometimes amateurish and incomplete special effects, and illogical stunt sequences . everytime Kamal and Asin emerge unscathed after an accident or encounter .

But all this apart, for all the racy screenplay and narration, impressive cinematography and above all Kamal Hassan' action, Dasavatharam is a must watch for the average film buff, atleast once.
