Dasaprakash the famous hotel brand from Mysore had died out in Chennai. Now, Indian Express Group has taken a franchise from one of the divided factions and started a restaurant with the Dasaprakash brand, at Express Avenue, Chennai. There is a claim that it is the largest (by no of covers) in Chennai. Went with some standard expectations of Dasaprakash (it used to be great in Mumbai, Chennai and even today is decent in Mysore).
The reception up to taking you to your seat was good. After that, it was sheer chaos. The steward told us that the Dasaprakash name is just been franchised and it is Indian Express that 'runs' and manages the place.
The menu was thin (will take some time to expand, I was told). The choices were standard and the prices were very high.
The service was sloppy. Starters were served at the end.
Portions were very small and disappointing.
One could mistake the sambar for badly made rasam.
The rasam was good.
Bisibele, which is supposed to be a speciality of Mysore, was trash. No vegetables and sweet also. Had never tasted such bad Bisibele.
175 bucks for a dosa, 175 for Bisi bele and 50 for coffee. Saravana Bhavan is far better. And both trail the Bombay / Bangalore udipis in value and taste
All in all, a place to avoid.
