Picture this. It’s 1990 and two brothers are s’h’itting back to back in a field, in Uttar Pradesh, on a sunny morning. Big brother says “I am going to revolutionize Indian Cinema. Indian audiences deserve better than the pelvic thrusts of Jitendra, the bloody intentions of Dharmendra, the wet saaree’s of Mandakini! I am going to instill some class into the proceedings; instill some wisdom, complexity and depth into Indian Cinema”. The younger brother shook his head, simply smiled and thought to himself “IDIOT!”
Cut to 2010, it’s Mumbai and the audience is going berserk as Chul Bul Pandey wrecks Havoc. In the theater the Elder Brother sits perplexed at the proceedings as Younger Brother explains. “Remember that sunny day, as we s’h’at in our fields and you had given me crap about revolutionizing Indian Cinema? Wisdom and Intelligence is an over-rated concept, do you still think our audience needs Depth?” Elder Brother simply shook his head and thought to himself “IDIOTS!”

Dabangg is exactly what it’s Promo promised it would be - Hard Hitting Insanity. What Ghajini unleashed and Wanted consolidated, is true – Public wants Complete and Utter Nonsensical Mayhem. And Dabangg is 100% Unadulterated Nonsense. Unpretentiously Slam, Bam, Thank You Mam, Dabangg is Salman’s vehicle to Mega Stardom. What Rajni Can’t Salman Can!
Dabangg is about ChulBul Pandey, who shares a hate-love relation with his Step-father Mr.Pandey( Vinod Khanna) and step brother Makkhi(Arbaz Khan). His mother(Dimple Kapadia) tries to make him understand, but he promises to make his step relatives lives a living hell when he grows up. He grows up to be a policeman who routinely bashes up goons, his brother, steals from dacoits, blackmails politicians and harasses but conquers his pretty maiden( Sonakshi Sinha). He can do absolutely anything. He is no Robindhood, he is wicked, twisted Superman. As he is such a pain in the a… neck, the villain decides to use his step brother to finish him, but in turn is SMOKED to death. All in all, there is no storyline; it’s basically mind-numbing juvenility rotating around Chulbul Pandey.
Dabangg is not about “STORY”, it’s about “Style”. Chulbul Pandey is one of the strongest characters written in recent times and it seems like Salman was born to potray him. Salman slips into this totally whacky, tacky character and lights up the screen everytime he appears on it. As he spits one “PJ”(of the basest quality) after another, the public rolls in laughter. It’s not just about the way he delivers the dialogue; its about the body language. Be it walking, talking or dancing – Salman is in top form. Beyond that, Dabangg is an exercise in Stupidity. Dimple overacts, as Arbaz forgets to act. Vinod Khanna hams, as Sallu Slams. Sood is routinely lewd, Sonakshi looks good - wears a single expression for most of the movie. Sallu asks her “Why the LONG FACE?” I retort “Born with it!” Friend goes “Maybe everytime she went to her father, Shatru said – KHAMOSH!”
While the Camera work and editing is as TACKY as the movie, the Music completely rocks. You have to experience the din of the hooting in a Single Theater like Chandan Cinema – while Salman grooves to the mellifluous “Tere Mast Mast Do Nain” or the rapturous “Munni Badnam Hui”. – its truly exhilarating.
Dabangg is a movie made to be watched in a single theater, with friends who are preferably insane or drunk. Because only then can you witness the power of a MASS hero in action; only then can you experience the power of Stupidity; only then can you truly leave your inhibitions behind and roll on the floor laughing at anything remotely funny; only then can you save yourself from tearing off your hair or toupee! Disclaimer –** For all the Intellectual Junta – Please keep your brains at home or you might just lose it in the theater! The cash registers are rolling, the madness growing. What are you waiting for? The bang is deafening… hun hun… go dumb…go dumb. go dumb… go dumb….hun hun. go dumb. go dumb…go dumb…
