Budding Engineers ahoy!. Review on DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering, Mumbai

This is one review I am going to enjoy writing..because its about MY college...D.J.Sanghvi College of Engineering(I just finished my 6th semester exams in the branch of Electronics and Telecomm)So who better than yours truly to take u on a trip of the college?Hop on!

About the college

Dwarkadas J Sanghvi College of Engineering,popularly known as DJ,is a somewhat recent addition to the list of engg.colleges in Mumbai.DJ, built in the mid-nineties by Shri Vile Parle Kelavni Mandal(SVKM),is affiliated to University of Mumbai.It is one of the very few newer engg. institutions to be awarded an 'A'grade by by the Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra State, on the basis of norms laid down by the AICTE.

Location

The college is located in the heart of suburbs,the mecca of colleges,Vile Parle(West).Situated right opposite the famous Cooper Hospital,it is easy to locate and almost equidistant from Andheri and Vile Parle railway stations.

For neighbours,it has some residential buildings on one side,and Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic(also a sister concern) on the the other.

There are seven departments or engg. branches offered by DJ.These are:

1.Bio-Medical

2.Chemical

3.Computers

4.Electronics

5.Electronics and Telecommunication(EXTC)

6.Information Technology

7.Production

Faculty

The college has some of the best professors in all the branches,a distinguished faculty indeed.Each lecturer is highly qualified and experienced in their respective fields,from B.Es to M.Es to Ph.Ds. Apart from the full time faculty,there is also a visiting faculty,that imparts knowledge to the students.

College Building

The college building is six storeys tall.Till last year,a part of the sixth floor was a girls' hostel,which is non-existent right now.The sixth floor is the IT dept.and the only floor that has air-conditioned classrooms.Other floors'classrooms are supposed to be converted to AC in the coming years.The fifth floor is currently shared by EXTC and Production depts. whereas the fourth,third and second are for Bio-Med,Electronics and Chemical respectively. The first floor houses the Office area,where administration,accounts and exam sections are located along with the Principal's office.

Library,Laboratories and other facilities

The college library is well equipped with books on all relevant topics.Also available are periodicals and science magazines for extra curricular interests of the students.

Each department has its own set of state-of-the-art labs and drawing halls and very spacious at that.The workshop area on the ground floor is hard to miss,with all the huge machines for production students and special tables for carpentry,welding etc(a part of the first year syllabus).

About admissions and students

The admission procedure is divided into two,one is the centralised procedure conducted according to University norms and the second one is the minority quota(read Gujarati quota).50%of the total seats of each branch are reserved for Gujaratis,hence a sizable part of the students'crowd is Gujju.

Normally a good amount of percentage is required for getting admissions in the technical branches,especially through centralised admissions.

Academic Performance and Campus Placements

Year after year,the college has been producing some of the top rankers in various branches in the University exams. Almost half of the population of students opts for higher studies abroad.

There is a high quality of campus recruitments and placements in some of the top companies like L&T Group, Mahindra & Mahindra Group, NSE, PCS, Tata Infotech, Wipro Infotech. etc.

Miscellaneous

The college has an IEEE society,hosts a good amount of sporting activities and apart from that there are the normal ''College Days'' and the annual day.Also held are the technical events and festivals, both intra-college and inter-college.

Some Downsides

A very integral part of a college missing here is the canteen.There used to be a small n not too efficient canteen about three years back,but it was shut down for reasons unknown.However,the 'Zunka Bhakar'(ZB)Kendra just outside the college is the unofficial canteen.So every time hunger strikes,students have to go all the way downstairs to ZB to grab a bite.Quite inconvenient during short breaks.

Another downside is the lack of a spacious campus.Most of the available space is occupied by parked cars.

Finally

I guess this is all there is to know about the college. Since its admission time now,lots of anxious students(aspiring engineers may I add) would want details about the prospective colleges,so I hope I've been able to help them to know one college better,by writing this review.

To conclude,all I'd like to say is that I'm proud to be a DJite and would surely recommend it to any aspiring engg. student.
