An Art called ''Cricket''

Cricket-as one and all knows is one of the most popular game in the contemporary world of sports.Especially in India, there are millions of fanatic followers of cricket. The game has become a religion of sorts and the players are hailed as Gods. Elsewhere in the world, this game is played for fun and somewhere else it is played for pride. At its birthplace it is played for the love of the game and down under it is played for Supremacy.

Ultimately, Cricket is played in every continent of the world and day by day its popularity is increasing. But is cricket just another game of sport? Is it just a game played for fun or for supremacy and glory? Is it just another game consisting of 22 players(13 effectively on field), trying to win?Or is it just another lucrative market where lots of money is involved? If you ask me, the answer would be NO.

Because I personally feel, Cricket, is not just a game, but an Art.It is definitely a Skillful portrayal of one's talent and an extraordinary display of hand-eye co-ordination, accuracy, power, agility and above all else, attitude. In argument, every sport is an art.But what makes cricket stand apart is the fact that it has got so many intricate aspects involved, making cricket a special game.

The Art of Cricket:- Cricket can be compared to any other art that involves the effective combination of both, mental and physical aspects, say, Martial Arts.

Likewise, Cricket has two faces, the mental face and the physical face.

*Mental Aspects:

  1. Attitude:-** Any cricketer, is not complete without a good attitude. But what kind of attitude? An aggressive,

reflective and positive attitude.

I still remember Yuvraj Singh hitting Allan Donald for a boundary, pulling him disdainfully, after being hit on the ribs the previous ball. Now that is attitude

Why? Take Venkatesh Prasad clean bowling Amir Sohail in the 96 World Cup Quarters, just after Sohail had smashed Venki for a boundary and badly intimidated him.

2.Temperment:-As important is attitude, so is the temperment.Having a good temperment to pace an innings, being patient enough to accumulate runs is very necessary.

Glenn Mcgrath bowling tirelessly on an unhelpful pitch, shows what a strong temperment he has.

Concentration:-Any cricketer, no matter how perfect he may be has to concentrate hard, in order to survive. Only good concentration can help perfect the game.Lapses in concentration have cost many a match.

In addition to these a cricketer has to be patient and should be able to think before he acts.

*Physical Aspects:

1.Skill:-** To master this amazing game of cricket, skill forms an important part in a cricketer's armour. Now there are so many skillful players around.

But what amazes me most is, Muralitharan spinning the ball square on a pitch that dosent assist spin of any kind, Tendulkar paddle sweeping Shane Warne's ball pitched on the rough and many more.

2.Courage:-Being courageous and going any far, for the cause of cricketing excellence personifies a complete cricketer.Courage is what defines a true cricketer.

I can still remember Malcom Marshall bowling with a broken wrist to fetch 7 wickets against England and our very own Anil Kumble playing with his face wrapped in band aid, in the recent series against the windies.

3.Agility:-Being active, fit and agile is very necessary if one has to master this art.Being albe to test one's physical limits, to be as accurate as possible, is what makes me a perfect cricketer.

When it comes to agility, I can oly think of Jonty Rhodes. His breathtaking dives and those instant-reflex catches, leaves me in total awe of this wonderful cricketer.

Thus, there are many more to add up with these, which make up the art of cricket. Hence, Cricket is not just a game to be watched, but an art to be learnt. Any common man can derive so much from this wonderful game. And there are so many exponents of this game who have mastered it and are still learning more from it.And the people whom I have mentioned here are among that elite club.(Off course Yuvraj is used here as just an example for his aggressive attitude)

Therefore, as a big admirer of this game and more so, an obidient student of this sensational art, I wold suggest each and everyone to not just watch cricket but feel it because it has got so much to offer us.

A Humble requestDont play cricket as a game, but instead, practise it as an art.

As a final note I would like to say that this review has got to do nothing about cricket scams but this is just about what cricket is to me.Since I have already written a review on cricket, I didnt have a place to write another one on this wonderful game and I didnt want to edit my previous one, so here I am in this section.I humbly apologise for this but I didnt have a better option
