I have had the opportunity to use two credit cards.They are ANZ Grindlays and SBI VISA.My father uses a HSBC card, Standard Chartered ATM card and Citibank Gold card.All cards are used very sparingly so the experience is likewise.
The greatest advantage credit cards offer is that you don't have to carry cash.You can buy whatever you wish and pay at leisure.I bought my scanner and the Satyam 120 hour connection using my cards which are obviously add-ons.Every month a statement is sent to the cardmember.From expenses incurred a minimum amount has to be paid.Thus you can spend and pay however you wish.There is also a credit limit which indicates how much moolah you can actually splurge in a month.As far as I know certain cards can be used at ATMs by using a certain supplied code.Online shopping can be done with credit cards too.
I believe credit cards are VERY USEFUL!
