A Multi-ethnic Sophisticated Magazine. Review on Cosmopolitan

COSMOPOLITAN..... This is my first review under the “Magazines” Category. I started reading the “Cosmopolitan” in 2003 and my first purchase happened at Hotel Park Sheraton, Chennai.

The Board meetings of my Company are generally held at Hotel Park Sheraton and being the Organizer of the meetings, I am always available at the Hotel during my Company’s meetings. After the meeting has commenced at the Banquet Hall, I start browsing through the Hotel Lobby to while-away my boredom moments. On one such day, I started a conversation with a Newspaper Store Hawker at the Hotel and he informed me that Cosmopolitan is the highly sold magazine in his stall. I was quite surprised to hear that because the magazine is pretty costly, which costs around INR 50/-. So, I acquired a glimpse …… why not give it a try!!!

The first issue of Cosmopolitan was moderately interesting to me. I’m already a Magazines-Freak having a passion for magazines with substance and I am a regular reader of Tamil magazines like Mangaiyar Malar, Junior Vikatan & English magazines like Business India, India Today, Femina, Health, Care etc. As much as I am interested in reading about Corporate Business, general entertainment and health & sex related subjects too interest me a great deal.

COSMOPOLITAN

Well, Cosmopolitan is a monthly magazine sold for INR 50/-. Subscribers could obtain their copies at a very discounted price and long-term subscribers are given plenty of useful Gifts too.

Every Issue of Cosmopolitan contains:

•The cosmo cover look : This features a Cover Star Stats, i.e., this page would contain information about the cosmetics used by the Model appearing on the Top cover.

•From the Editor : This displays news or any subject related writings by the Editor of Cosmopolitan. At present, Ms. Payal Kohli writes beautifully on various interesting topics and frequently provides motivating advices.

•You tell us : This is yet another interesting page. This page contains the readers’ writings to Cosmo on their personal opinions / suggestions about the magazine. Every good and useful suggestion is published without fail. So far four of my suggestions have been published in this Page.

•Cosmo commandments : By the word commandments, I am sure you would have guessed that this is about some 10 things. Yes, you are correct. This leaf includes some useful advices on 10 things to be done or not to be done etc. Every Issue of Cosmo deals with different subject matters in this page and provides valuable & informative guidances.

•Confessions most shocking stories : My first choice is this page in Cosmo. This page features the most interesting anecdotes from the readers. They talk about the most shocking stories and embarrassing incidents in their lives and every event is damn attention-grabbing. As soon as I get my copy of Cosmo, I go on to this page only!!

•Ask cosmo anything : Well, this is yet another worthy of note page containing readers’ queries which are answered by Ms. Irma Kurtz. Her replies to queries are almost totally unexpected by the readers. If given a choice, we would have answered the queries in a totally different way, but she handles the queries very carefully and provides really effective practically possible advices.

•The Cosmo also focuses on Shopping guide & Bedside Astrology on all its Issues.

My Opinion about Cosmopolitan:

Many members have expressed a view that Cosmo contains more of very vulgar sex-related subjects. One thing which they would have to remember is that, we are no more into the ages of hiding an item called SEX in our closed hands. These days every media viz., the television, internet, magazines and lot more play a vital role in educating our youth on every matter, including sex.

Only we look into SEX as a vulgarity, this magazine would be detestable for us. Cosmo deals with varied subjects (of course, so called related to SEX) like :

• Love & lust

• Relationships

• Pregnancy & parenting

• Love & sex

And even a lot more related subjects. I personally feel that every youth should be provided with sex-education which would wipe away all the vulgar-attitudes of the youth towards sex. Except for the “Ask Cosmo Anything” section, I think the other write-ups in Cosmopolitan on subjects related to sex are informative and very educative.

Cosmopolitan has very well utilized the current trend of awareness about dieting & a balanced nutritional diet. There are often write-ups in Cosmo about “DIET & FITNESS” which are compiled with advices from Dieticians and doctors.

Cosmopolitan also extensively deals with subjects like :

•News (National & International)

•Entertainment

•Child Abuse / Child Labour

•Fashion & Beauty

•Introduction of latest trends in dressing

SUITABLE FOR :

Well, “Cosmopolitan” is well suited for all people of the age above 13 years. Regular reading of this magazine would I am sure improve the knowledge of people on all subjects.
