SEX and the Indian Society
Sep 02, 2007 06:50 PM 10980 Views

Its well known that life as it exists today could have not been possible without the existence of SEX. However, it is still a taboo to discuss about it in the indian society.

God created opposite sexes to complement each other and to propagate life on this plannet. Hence the method of intercourse exists. All those who have had it know what it means, and those who are still somewhat younger and away from it, also feel the urge. Despite the same, **this is a topic that has never found it intom school books or at even higher levels of education.

Sex Education: It is important to start it at an age prior to puberity. The reasons are many, but the paramount one being to prevent the wandering of young minds into unhealthy practices. It is not surprising that people even at adult ages can not differentiate between safe sex and unsafe sex. Especially in villages there is even less awareness of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV etc. No wonder India has the 2nd highest growth rate in terms of AIDS patients.

That was the physical angle. Lets look at the emotional angle too. What is sex without love? Sex should normally be an expression of love for one's companion. That also means that sex should be had with only one person, and the world would be a better place to live in. But all of know that this basic rule is flouted at every nook and corner of the world. Part of this behaviour can be attributed to the fact that we as children were never taught how to think correctly about sex. There are extremely few parents that ever discuss sex with their children, in order to prepare them for the future. The same statistic for countries like USA, UK, Australia would be much higher.

The Taboo: Discussing about sex has always been a taboo in our society, although we are the top rankers in having sex and increasing our population by the size of Australia every year. We fail to realise that sex is as essential need of our body and mind as is food and sleep. The general connotation of sex in India is Porn, which needs to change.

Sex sells: Most of ecommerce revenue today comes out of sites related to pornography. Pornography exists and grows by the second because there are those who are willing to pay for it. What is that exact need of a person, that is so oevrwhelming that he is willing to pay for watching nude women doing all sorts of acts for his pleasure. Part of this is due to lack of sex education, but most of it is due to no or very little dialogue with one's sex partner, about sex.

Misuse of technology: The explosion of internet and mobile connectivity has added fuel to the fire. MSS clips of Mallika Sherawat having sex have been floating over the networks. What's more, phone sex companies are mushrooming at a faster rate than call centers. Popular community sites are being used to rope in sex partners for a fling. This just goes on to prove how suppressed the Indian mind is about sex. The major cause of the same is that **we never discuss sex under healthy circumstances.

Will we ever change? This is question that has been lukking in my mind for years. I am not sure how well the new generation understands the same, but I have decided that I will educate my children about it when they are at the right age. I am fortunate to have a companion who agrees to the same whole heartedly.
