The recent ad of Coca Cola featuring Aamir Khan as Tourist is hilarious and according to me best of all the ads done by him till now. Aamir khan has played variety of roles in Coca Cola ad campaign. First one was of Punjabi, later followed by Bihari, Nepali and one as a Tapori( loafer or Hyderabadi goonda). Actually all the ads were better than their predecessor, same goes with this one. This ad is part of Coca Cola’s summer ad campaign “Thande Ka Tadka” which was launched by Aishwarya Rai.
This ad was conceptualized by Advertising Guru Prasoon Joshiof McKann Erickson. His previous ad campaign “piyo sar uthake” was a success. He and his advertising firm have been successful in making “Thanda” synonymous with Coca-Cola. This ad had been directed by Pradip Sarkar (who is also associated with movie ‘Parineeta’). Wonderful make up of Aamir Khan was done by makeup-man Jogendra Gupta. He is responsible for superb portrayal of Amir Khan as Japanese(or Chinese?) tourist.
This ad is done with the aim of launching a planned integrated food campaign, which will leverage other evolving media and will be supported by a strong on the ground program.
The Ad
The ad starts with an empty restaurant with a Manager and waiters who are bored waiting for customers. Then Aamir Khan enters the restaurant. He has been given looks of Mr Inga Pinga Chinki Pinki(thas what I call people with Japanese looks). Hotel staff is happy to see this bakra. They bring a special menu which is specially designed for tourist promotion and to ward of poverty in India. In this sweet menu samosa is priced at 200Rs(so cheap), Pakoras are priced at 200 too. Aamir Khan says something in alien language which Managers antenna is not able to receive. Then he writes in a chit
“Thanda Samosa,Thanda Pakora”. To which our Manager replies that they don’t have any thing thanda here(but may be baasi), every thing is hot. Our Tourists gets up and feels home. He rushes to the Kitchen and brings two bottles of Coke and two plates Samosa and Pakora.
Then he tells manager that he is not a foreigner. He is a photographer and while photographing Honey Bees (God knows why he did not get anything else to take photo) they kissed him on cheeks and eyes ….giving him Okee Pokee Chinky looks.
Ad is real fun to watch….fully entertaining. Acting of Aamir is superb, so is the acting of Anjan Shrivastav and other hotel staff.
Out of ten I will rate this add 9.5.
