I know it is Steven Spielberg and it was 1977 and all that. But man, what was he thinking?! It is even more disappointing because it is Spielberg!
The plot is that of Alien invasion(years ago and again in'77)and abduction(no ransom no demands;-)!). It made history because of the Sci-fi effects, aliens being portrayed as benign and probably because of the sound effects.Hailed as the one of the best Spielberg movies?!
I am of the opinion that if an Ad can capture a message in 30s then a 2 hour long movie should be able to give a clear message. This movie doesnt even make an attempt to do that. It doesnt define the characters, doesnt explain the obsession and most importantly the "WHY" of what was happening. If the Aliens abducted the military personnel from Flight 19 then WHY? Why did they make another appearance in 1977. Why did they abduct the Widow's kid? Why did they do what they did in the end? The movie just assumes that we will be we will be awestruck with the special effects and watch the movie with our mouth wide open.
Let us assume for a while that the motive is the "unexplainable phenomenon" and look at other aspects. The acting of the protagonist doesnt leave an impact. You watch the obsession of the Scientist in "Back to the future" and wonder why this one does not make a connection.
The script is too weak and wanders just like the movie does from one part of the world to another(and beyond!). And direction, if I may call it is mis-direction.
My recommendation: There are definitely better movies around even if your taste is as narrow as "Sci-fi and Old."
