Taking My Day Off.... With Oil.

As a huge fan of the Clinique line, it’s no surprise that I’ve tried Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover, I’ve tried almost every makeup remover out there. I refuse (as most of you ladies should) to go to bed with makeup on- on the nights when I do (perhaps twice a year), I wake up with an unsightly pimple located somewhere on my skin- serves me right, I suppose.

Because I have a lot of allergies, I need to make sure the makeup remover I choose won’t bother my eyes, many of them that I have tried, do. Of course, I also look for one that will remove the makeup… who would have guessed.

I first tried this product about 7 months ago- a friend had boughten it and didn’t like it. Knowing how much I love getting any sort of beauty product, especially when it’s free, she handed the $14.50 bottle over to me and let me try it (without telling me why she didn’t like it). The product comes in the usual Clinique-looking bottle- a frosted purple/pinkish bottle with a silver twist off top (the sample ones come with a green top). As soon as the product was in my hands, I used it. Granted, it wasn’t night-time and I don’t usually take off my makeup in the daytime, but I was excited to try it (call me weird, if you must).

My first impression was rather disgusting- like many makeup removers out there, the “two liquids” in the bottle are separated- oil on top and water on bottom. However, by shaking the bottle the two liquids will combine together and form a cloudy substance, that still looks rather scary to put on my eyes. Upon application, I noticed how slick the product was… too slick. After removing all of my makeup, I had to swipe a washcloth over my eyes to get rid of the oil. My lids are very oily, and this didn’t help them any! I’d like to be able to get past that step of having to wash my eyes with water after using the remover.

Looking past the oil and slickness of the remover, I must admit it is a fantastic makeup remover, mainly for your eyes. You really need to be careful around your eyes (whether you have allergies or not) because the skin around them is sensitive- you also don’t want to have to rub back and forth on your eyes in order to get the makeup off, you can pull out lashes or just “tire” your skin out.. You don’t need to do that with this remover- one (sometimes two) swipes of a cotton ball (though I suggest using a cotton pad so little pieces of fuzz don’t get in your eyes) and the makeup will be gone.

The remover has never ever stung my eyes or made them burn, as other removers have- it’s as gentle as water would feel. However, as good as this remover may “take my day off”, it’s not enough to keep using the product- and certainly not enough to actually pay for it. There are removers out there that will take the makeup off just as good… without the oil and grease slathered on my lids.
