I happen to use an ICICI Gold card as my primary credit card and I am quite satisfied with it - no junk mails from their affiliates, no ad hoc charges, good online system which is great if you have also have a bank account with them. I applied for a Citi card as they were offering a free supplementary card (ICICI was asking 750/- fee) and I wanted one for my wife. The Citi nuisance started the next month itself. First there was a letter about a easy utility bill facility for 99/- which I didn't want and I promptly ignored. Imagine my surprise when there is a 99/- charge in the credit card statement the next month. I had to call them up (their customer service number for Western region was a cell number in Mumbai) and get it cancelled. That's a cost of a 10 minute call and wasted time for no fault of mine. Next, I get some letter from their insurance services which is worded in such a manner that you feel they'll charge you some premium unless you tell them that you do not want it. After the utility bill charge, it was clear Citi would drop to any level and so I again called them up and got that cancelled too. Add another 10 minute call and waste of time. The worst was yet to come. Next month, there's a charge of about 500/- for some Good Health insurance premium which I had never opted for. I again called them and told them to cancel, to which they said that their records show I had opted for this and can only cancel 75% of the amount. C'mon, health insurance is not something that you would like to have automatically paid through credit card. Plus, I already have health insurance, so why would I go for something like this? That was the last straw. I refused to pay up. I get a statement every month now with about 400/- for late fews every month. The total outstanding has now touched 2000/-. That is a huge irritation for someone like me who has an excellent credit history. But I have learnt to ignore it as Citi will not listen to reason. Learn from my experience, and avoid Citibank credit cards.
