With all the failed attempts by Indian directors to make an enjoyable masala entertainer, it’s refreshing to see one filmmaker finally get things more right than wrong.Priyadrshan’s Chup Chup Ke isn’t a great film, but it’s definitely an enjoyable one with enough frivolous fun to satiate any need for mindless entertainment.

Story

Jeetu [Shahid] is a good-for-nothing young man who has had enough of his family and fiancee Sushma Reddy. Goaded by their constant disapproval, he decides to commit suicide -- at least they can benefit from his life insurance. He plunges into the sea -- But, as luck would have it, he is fished out by two fishermen Bandya (Paresh Rawal) and Gundya (Rajpal Yadav).

They mistakenly believe that he is a millionaire. Jeetu too pretends that he is deaf and mute.

Bandya and Gundya decide to use their windfall catch for settling their old debt to a Gujarati businessman named Prabhat Singh Chauhan (Om Puri). They give Jeetu to Prabhat and get their debts settled.

By a strange coincidence, Prabhat Singh’s niece Shruti (Kareena Kapoor) too turns out to be mute, but not deaf. Her ultra-possessive elder brother (Suniel Shetty) has been trying to marry her off, but the engagement has been called off. Neha Dhupia is Kareena's cousin

They [Neha/Kareena]discover Jeetu is an impostor after a night of drunken revelry .The two girls like Jeetu, and decide to conceal his secret .Jeetu and Shruti are in love. But things aren't as simple. Will Jeetu ever be able to get out of the mess of lies he has created for himself? Will he and Shruti get married?

Critical analysis

Most films these days start off promisingly but lose fizz later on in the film, but Chup Chup Ke starts out like a dream, retains its impact until the interval and manages to get better after the interval! A story of this kind has been witnessed a hundred times before on celluloid and the genre has been done to death in the earlier 80's but its the scripting and treatment department where it scores! To enhance the script, the screenplay is strong enough to support it. It does have its shares of flaws, but those are easily overlooked from a viewer’s perspective since the movie is well executed and exudes in entertainment value.

The first half is laced with comic moments which are utterly BRILLIANT. Neeraj Vora has the viewer in hysterics and the scenes have been written with utmost perfection. The entire episode from Shahid [Jalpara] plunging into the sea to reaching upto Om Puri's house brings the housedown .Vora's dialogue writing skills must also be given credit here as he has done a emmaculate job . The second half is laced with dramatic and emotional moments and most of them hit the spot on.

As a director Priyadarshan again reinforces the fact that he is a talent to reckon with. His forte is no doubt comic sequences and the entire first half is filled with some of the funniest comic scenes and one liners to come out in recent times. He never takes the viewer to the ultra serious level and never lets the movie turn to melodrama. .The end sequence is amongst one of the best and remain etched in the viewers mind.

Priyadarshan also knows how to extract superlative performances from his entire cast .The performances aren’t all perfect, but he has done a good job in making them good, and this proves to be a major strong point of the movie.

Just when you thought Paresh Rawal couldn’t get better in terms of versatility he strikes back with an out and out comic performance and is simply amazing. He is the backbone of the movie and no one could have pulled off such a character with utmost perfection like he has. The film easily leaves anticipation high for his other release '' Phir Hera Pheri.''

Rajpal is again at his comedic best her and his character is one, which will linger in the audiences mind after the movie is over.

Shahid has drastically improved over the years as actor. He has been given an interesting character and he gives it his very best shot. The scenes he shares with Rajpal are indeed the best in the movie! Neha Dhupia leaves a mark in her small role.Kareena is endearing in her part. Her delivery is great and her screen presence is simply terrific and she is natural to the core. Sushma Reddy is a eye opener. The young actress makes her debut here and she is very good.Sunil Shetty is outstanding in his supporting role.

Musically the film is good. Dil Vich is the best song of the movie and is placed well in the movie. Mausam Hain is a situational song that flows well with the story and manages to keep the viewer in splits .The dialogues are hilarious and keeping in sync with the genre of the movie.

Technically the film is superb and lavish. Cinematography is glossy and slick and the entire film looks like a fresh product.

All up

Chup Chup Ke is a roller coaster ride which is not to be missed.Go for it!
