Choosing a career is like choosing the best dresses for your wardrobe. There is always the ‘in-thing’ at a particular time. But one should choose for oneself what suits him best rather than what everyone is running after. It becomes more important in the case of a career because a person’s whole life revolves around it till the end.

When you are at the threshold of deciding a career, everyone even remotely related to you has something to say. Your parents may want you to take up a particular profession; your teachers may have some other advice for you. Then there is the prevailing market scene with some of its own trendy jobs. But you should keep in mind things that interest you the most .if you do something that you are really passionate about, it will benefit you in two ways. Firstly, you will enjoy what you do and your work will not become a burden in later stages of your life when you are otherwise less enthusiastic and accommodating. And secondly, your work will not suffer because you will be good at it naturally.

When you are deciding a career for yourself, think and think hard. You will have to evaluate yourselves, your likes and dislikes, your strengths and weaknesses. But above all, you will have to come to the conclusion about your purpose of choosing a particular stream of Education or the job you want eventually. People’s priorities in life differ from one another. Some may want to end up with loads of money, some may prioritise fame over much money, some may want security for a lifetime in work, some may want a job which allows them to travel to distant lands, some philanthropic soul may want the satisfaction of ‘having made a difference’ and so on. Thus your choice of your Major and job will also differ accordingly.

If you are interested in taking up a profession rather than a 9 to 5 job, you may take up courses like MBBS, BDS (for Dental Surgery), BUMS, LLB, CIFA (for auditors), Architecture etc. If you are an engineering student, you can also choose to have your own work as in a consultancy service. If you are a good writer, you can be a freelance writer what with all the paid freelance opportunities available on the net. You can be a photographer or take up any form of art you like. There are various such courses available in YMCA’s and other institutions.

If you prefer employment to profession, then too there is an array of opportunities available. If you are interested in Govt. jobs, you could go for foreign services, Railways, Income Tax, Banks and financial institutions, defence etc. If you are good with languages, many embassies are usually in search for translators.

Advertising is one interesting field of Mass Communication with scope for many talents like copywriters, graphic designers, proofreaders, and visualisers. Otherwise you could opt for Newspapers or TV Channels. They do not usually require any particular degrees. You can either do your Major in Mass Communication but even otherwise, if you have any particular talent, it may not be all that difficult. You could be a DJ at a Radio Station. All you need is confidence and the ability to entertain people with what you say.

If you are good with people, you can go into Sales. Sales is a general idea and you can choose from the many industries. It gives you the chance to work outdoors and not have a strict office timing. Sales job are easily available to people who are good at it and there are chances for making a lot of money here. You can be a customer support executive or could work in a call centre if u like working indoors.

Travel is an upcoming field with a wide scope. You have a lot of scope in Tourism in places like travel agencies, Govt.travel depts.,Airlines,Hotels and even in media with certain journals and magazines which are exclusively travel based. There are also a lot of perks for people in this field like opportunity to travel worldwide at company expenses to promote travel destinations. Though the salaries offered here are not too high.

These jobs I have mentioned above are just a handful. There are so many things a person can do only if he is ambitious and determined. For people who like to do social work, they can join the NGO’s. They can do MSW (Master of Social Works) but that is not an absolute must .You can be a Fashion Designer, Interior Designer, Dietician, Yoga Master, Geologist, Computer Programmer, Lecturer, Scientist, Librarian, Pharmacist, Nurse.Just about anything that interests you.

Awareness plays a very important role in choosing a career. You should be aware which Universities and Institutions offer the courses you want, the scholarships that are available etc. Besides this, one thing you can do is look at the classifieds of good dailies for job vacancies that will give you an idea what kinds of vacancies are there, what qualifications and skills they ask for.

Another important thing to keep in mind is the dignity of labour. There is no such thing as a ‘lowly job’! The job that you think you will enjoy doing is the right job. The only important thing is that you be good at what you do, whatever it may be.

Finally, when you have done all your efforts and chosen something

“Get what you like and like what you get!”
