You've got mail

I am on cable and of course e-mail came with the service and I can have up to 5 e-mail accounts. I only use one from my provider. If you use an ISP it will usually give you the option to use the same IP address or to use a rotating one. If you use the same one all the time it makes it easier for some one to get that number and therefore possible access to your computer. With a rotating number it makes it harder for them. I do recommend a good virus detector and also an intruder alert program be used as most all of your viruses will come by e-mail.

If you do get a virus from some one let them know. They may have one and not even know it. Don't assume they gave it to you on purpose. Don't open any attachments unless you scan them first.

I do have other e-mail accounts such as yahoo and hotmail and this is where I have what some would call junk mail come. Things I may be interested in but don't want them in with my regular mail.

You have to remember to visit these places often enough that you don't exceed the alloted space limit or they will delete your e-mails.

I find hotmail and yahoo useful in saving things also such as pictures and e-mails that I want to keep. These are stored on their server so if anything were to happen to my computer and I had to reformat lets say I would not lose these things and they would still be there. They do allot a certain amount of space so set up one simply for saving things and just forward them to yourself at the other account.

As for your POP account you can view these with the aid of outlook or netscape. Outlook does tend to let more viruses through but if you have good protection on it won't be a problem. I have used both and still prefer the features of Outlook. I use Incredimail at the moment and it just takes over outlook.

Always make sure you have an account that can be accessed through any computer in case your computer is down and some one needs to reach you. You will then be able to get your e-mail from any computer. If sharing a computer though be sure and remove all your cookies before leaving so no one else can get to your personal things.

I would never use an e-mail that does not have a spell checker as I tend to type too fast and make a bunch of mistakes so it is a good feature to have.

I try to use the same password for everything so that I have no problems remembering it. I also try to use the same name when it is available.
