Size Does Matter. Review on Choosing a Washing Machine

This time I would strictly stick to the topic concerned, no boring introduction and superfluous information, just plain simple tips.

Before buying a washing machine the features, qualities to look for are as follows.

1) Wash Load Capacity

2) Functionality (Automatic, Semi-Automatic etc.)

3) Wash Quality (Sometimes we may have to rely on Companies claims)

4) Convenience (Dimensions, Mobility)

5) Water Consumption

6) Type of Machine (Top loading, Front Loading)

I would reckon Wash Quality to be the most important of all to look for in a washing machine because what’s the use convenience etc if it can’t clean the cloths properly. Problem with deciding on wash quality of the product is that either we have to rely on Companies claim or we need to find someone with actual experience of washing with the machine. Generally all washing machines come with fair wash quality but machine with enhanced technology for washing (like rolling drums, heaters). It cleans the dirt better and also guards from any bacterial trouble. Inclusion of heater would directly affect the electric bill.

Choosing a Wash Load capacity depends on the requirement the buyer. If the family is big then desirable capacity would be above 5 kg. However for a small family with 3-4 persons a 5 kg machine should suffice the needs. As far as I know Front-loading machines don’t have the flexibility of changing the program once it is started. Meaning, if we start a program for wash and suddenly we realize that 2 cloths were left then in Front-Loading machine we can’t add the cloths later. So we need to inquire about that aspect before we buy the machine. Today is the age of Automatic machines but having an option for manual control is always better. Automatic feature is sensational because we don’t have to worry about the process involved in washing like washing, drying etc. Once the program is set we can go anywhere, do anything without worrying about the washing.

Apart from that, smaller the machine better it looks. All top loading machines occupy lesser space than front-loading machines. Because of high vibrations front loading machines must fixed to a place permanently. So it is immovable once fixed. Also they are very heavy and large in size. On the other hand top loading machines come on wheels. So once the washing is done we can move it anywhere in the house and park wherever is convenient. Thus Convenience is also an important aspect to consider before purchasing.

Water Consumption is an important feature to consider in India. Many areas have a limited water supply. The logical equation is that, more the water supply, better is the wash quality. There is no alternative to that. Still some washing machines consume amazingly less water. Front loading machine takes relatively greater amount of water. After all these considerations I would suggest top loading machine for average house with small families.

Finally about the cost of the machines. Front-loading machines are prized high than other machines but the wash quality is also better with them. A good washing machine would cost in between 10000-15000 Rs. The points I’ve discussed are the main to consider and think over before making the decision of buying.
