Technological Development is quite faster than Social Development, but any Technology, to be absorbed and utilised, has to be a part of Social Development. Moreover, with spectacular advancements in Science and Technology, there are many branches of each field of Science and Technology. Think of Physics and Electronics, which is a branch of Physics. But, what about Micro-Electronics ? It is a branch of Electronics. Therefore Specialization becomes necessary.
Even at the School Final stage, one selects either Maths or Sanskrit as an optional subject. At the graduation stage, one studies either Science, Commerce or Arts. If it is Science, Honours in which subject ? Physics or Chemistry or Biology ? At the post-graduate stage, say for M.Sc in Physics, what is the Specialization ? X-Rays, Spectroscopy or Wireless ? After passing B.Sc.(Hons.) in Physics, I studied M.Sc in Radiophysics and Electronics. That means within the Science * Stream * I studied Electronics as my Specialization.
The entire Educational System is specialization oriented. There is a story about a Medical student who wanted to specialize in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT). He was asked by his professor : '' Which nostril ? Left or Right ?
Therefore, Specialization is good, but narrow Specialization is not, but, whether we like it or not, without narrow Specialization, a professional would be out of job, because he has to adjust himself according to the market forces.
Instances are not uncommon, when one specialization leads to another. In my case it has been from Physics to Electronics to Communication to Adult Education to Distance Education to Curriculum Development. We can not avoid the dynamics of change, which is the Hall Mark of the Millennium !
