Both biotech and chemical engineering have a good scope as a career for the future. In fact the best thing would be to do a basic in chemistry followed by a masters or doctorate in biotechnology.
The practical utility of the concepts learned in University/ academics is totally different when working in an industry.
In the present era where Biotech is also growing at a fast pace in India, microbes are being used in place of chemical reagents to effect chemical transformations the combined knowledge of chemistry with biotechnology cannot be underestimated.
A vast are opening up in the US markets is that of biogenerics where biotech products going off patent are vying for the top slot when the generic market opens up. The rules for the generic product launch for biotech products are being framed but the generic applications have already started pouring in. This is indeed growing at a very fast pace.
Even Indian pharma majors have invested heavily both in basic biotech research and in biogenerics.
A truly effective blend would be a bio / chem basic degree the theoretical principles of which can be translated into the wonders of biotechnology
