Poor Man's guide to good sounding home theater

Do we really need to dole out 14, 000 bucks for a decent TV and 6000 bucks for a decent player and many more thousands for the speakers to get the ultimate home theatre and PC Gaming experience

NO. Not at all.

I have written this article for those who have their own pc's(most of us do, I think)

There are a few factors that we must consider while buying a new home theater system

  • First of all size of the room(viewing area)

  • The ambient noise(that is the surronding noise level.) If you live in a high rise near a busy street your ambient noise will be high. but if you live in the village or in countryside farmhouse(like I do) where everything is quite. ambient noise is very low

  • Your budget, that is, how much mooolah you can cough up

we can build a decent home theater sys on our own within 5k if we have a pc

Decent meants it will be able to do the following

-Play DVD movies with real nice sound(almost surround!)

  • Play Games to blow you away

We will need to purchase the following items

1 An LG DVD drive 1, 800

2 A creative inspire 2.1 speaker 2, 500

3 A creative vibra sound card 700

Total Rs 5000

I recommend the LG DVD drive because I use it and I have found no problems with it

The creative inspire gives awesome sounds and almost a real surrround like exp

the vibra sound card is needed to produce real good sound. Most computers have an inbuilt sound card(AC97) and they cannot take out the performance of the creative speaker

This will be our decent Home Theater system

I use this configuration in my hostel room and works well(and it fits in my budget too)

remember if you want to move up to the 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 systems you will have to pay atleast thricethe money.

Go outside consumerland and the companies will expect you to cough up the bucks

Do let me know your opinions!

Manish
