Mobile phones have travelled a long distance from looking heavy like a brick
the first one from the Motorola, to today’s slim models of phone again
a trend set by Motorola when they first introduced Motorazr.
A consumer today has plethora of options to choose from Basic phones, mid
–level phones, High end phones, Basic phones are phones which suffice
basic requirement of a cell phone, typically no frill’s phones which
suffice communication requirement with basic features, mid-level and
high end phones would give you a wide rage of functions and features to
select which makes choice difficult for a consumer at times.
Here's a list of pointers to check while deciding to buy a mobile phone:
Music & Entertainment function
Business support features
Camera quality
Style quotient
Post you have bought the phone, used it's features for quiet a time, then
you would like to customize your phone, this is where the phone OS
would come into play, currently the mobile handsets available in India
are equipped with Symbian OS, Linux, Windows Mobile and others to name, Symbian
OS is the most popular OS in the mobile OS market with different
versions for different phones, mainly Nokia and SE, Google is going to
come up with it's Mobile OS named Android.
You would get candy-bar style phones more commonly across brands, sliding phones, clam-shell models, touchscreen phones or PDA's, Camera
resolution ranging from 1.3 mega pixels up to 5 mega pixels, however
please note: Mobile phone camera's are equipped to take good pictures
under proper lighting conditions, low lights, excessive zooming would
distort images, also mobile phone images fail to reduce noise factor in
the images, which is visible at times as a grainy effect in the
photographs taken, however cybershot series from SE would give a slight
better quality images. so do not fall for the mega pixel trap, same goes for the video quality.
Market for stylish phone models is also expanding, Motorola was the
company to set this segment on fire with launch of Moto Razr during
2004 since then Samsung and LG have focused on this segment by
introducing slim, sleek and good looking phones like LG Shine, Samsung
metal series
As far as I know in India camera phones with good music & entertainment functionality
have done well in the market, Mobile buyer market in India is no longer
dominated by Nokia, it's facing the heat from Sony Ericsson and
Motorola. Nokia has N-series phones to bank upon, Sony is vouching on
the Walkman Series phone, Motorola is slow to catch up seems to running
out of idea's and has being launching slim models which somewhere look
to repeat Razr success, however Motorola has being able to revive their
market with launch of music range phones. Samsung and LG are small
players and have a niche market.
Mobile technology has being
evolving on a rapid pace globally, we are also seeing launch of high
end handsets in India as well, still the mobile technology has not
evolved beyond 2G and GSM, CDMA service has it's own limitations. Mobiles with HSDPA technology have arrived in India, already a rage in Europe, global markets have modified their strategy to increase ARPU
(Average revenue per user) by offering high quality, innovative content
based services rather than only banking on voice service. I imagine
when would I be able to get blazing download speeds on my cell, whereas
the so-called broadband service in our country is struggling.
If you decide to buy a cell phone with good camera quality and good music
functionality, you can look at buying these models, SE W810i, SE
W700i, W610i these phones are equipped with good music playing
capability with 2 MP camera enough to satisfy a amateur photo
enthusiast. I have only listened to music once from a friend's Nokia
N70 handset, well it failed to lighten up my senses, Nokia N series is
high on looks, features as I see, SE handsets would provide you
flexibility on adding themes, third party applications, however any
handset running on Symbian OS would offer you more exciting third party applications.
I would recommend following Nokia phones for Nokia enthusiasts:
Nokia 6080(Basic) - Phone good on looks, crisp screen, Series 40 Symbian OS, Radio Function, Price - Approx Price: Rs 4500 to Rs 5600
Nokia 6300(Mid - Level) - slim look, crisp bright big mobile screen, 2MP Camera and decent list of features at reasonable price - Approx Price: Rs 7000 to Rs 8000
Nokia E50 (Mid-Level Business category Phone) - High speed Internet
capability, document viewer, good business functions - Approx Price: Rs
8500
I further list following phones as good buying option which offer choice
for style, music and entertainment features, camera quality, business
function.
Nokia phones - N70, E61i, N95, E90, N81, N72, Nokia Prism.
SE Phones - z550i, k750i(Cybershot), k550i(Cybershot), w700i, w810i,
W950i, w300i, k790i(Cybershot), Watch out for. W960i(Touchscreen
walkman series phone, a stunner)
Motorola
- W220, SLVR7, RAZR v3i, Razr2 v8, ROKR E6 watch out for Razr 2 v9
(Streaming Mobile entertainment, with Razr looks, High speed internet)
To add I have not featured any Samsung or LG phone since I have never used
one so would not like to rate them or recommend them, so if you are out
to buy a good mobile check first what features you would require, do
you need to make a statement with your phone, are you a music freak,
like to take casual snaps, need office apps, good internet support, if
you have answers to these questions then zero on to a model of your
choice keeping into consideration your budget.
We now have good range of handsets available with CDMA service providers,
and dual sim handsets from Samsung and Spice mobiles which have arrived
recently, If you are someone who likes to keep changing mobile handsets,
then gray market would be a place to get good bargain, obviously
sellers in gray market would not give you bill or offer you warranty on
mobile phones they sell, for those who ideally stick to a handset for
quiet some time and do not prefer changing handsets much, always buy
mobiles from branded outlets, company owned shops, as you now get good
deals form them as well with the advantage of warranty and after-sales
service.
So go ahead pick one that reflects your personality and suits your taste.
