Since this is sort of an advice to people out there who have just about had it with regular modems and recurring disconnections, there is one major thing I would like to point out - cable internet comes at a price. So if you're not using too much internet, or not downloading much, you can be happier with regular dial-up.

I have massive use for the internet. Downloads and Surfing are regular 'hobbies', and since my work is also internet related, it was absolutely necessary for me to change to cable internet. My service provider charges me Rs.1,000/- for a month - 1GB download, 10kbps approx.

The major factor is money. If the charges exceed 1,500 p.m, its not worth it - period. 'Coz you live in India. Here you have power failures, here you have thefts, and here you have inefficient service. So for sure for a good part of the month the internet is going to be unavailable. At least I dont find it light on my pocket to dish out 1,500 bucks for 20 days internet.

Next, you better make enquiries regarding speed. They will boast of 64kbps or so, however dont expect much. It will normally not exceed 10kbps while surfing and 20kbps while downloading.

Another important factor is the downloading limit. Normally, your provider will enforce a download limit depending on the scheme you take up. If you like downloading heavy loads of music and videos, you'd much rather clear it out at first, than repent later.

Sure enough, the installation charges should be affordable. I gave Rs.4,000 excluding LAN card. Incase you're not good with technical specifications, you should take the help of a computer literate friend and figure out if the installation charges are really worth it. Most people will tend to rob you here.

All these aside, the most important factor lies in the service. It is sad, you cannot really know much about it before getting it installed first. In my case, my provider gave me few numbers of clients to check up if they were happy. I randomly tried someone, who told me of the merits and demerits and eventually it helped me a great deal to make the decision.

The service should be good. Very good. You should have someone at your aid round the clock. The downtime should be very less (time the internet is down). And definitely, the assistance providers should be soft-spoken and helpful, else it just becomes very irritating.

In a shell, cable internet is one great thing, but only if you have a good service provider, else it is just a white elephant. It comes at a cost, and seldom worth it. Don't compromise, 'coz you're paying for it. And do have a big enough heart to adjust with the fact that not always can it be superfast, and not always can it be available.

I hope this helps you choose a suitable provider.
