When you think about God’s Own Country - Kerala, first appears in your mind the very splendid boat race that thrills millions TheNehru Trophy Boat Race which will be held on 9th August in Punnamada backwaters.
Alappuzha, being referred to as the Venice of the East, it is famous for its boat races, This splendid boat race awaits you, with all its charm and competitive spirit, with 100 to 120 oarsmen plough the waters to the tune of the legendary ,rhythmic boat songs or Vanchipattu.
The race is held on the second Saturday of August every year. The event is a commemoration of the visit to this place by the late Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1952.
and the trophy for the winners was instituted by Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru,the first Prime Minister of India. Apart from the races of snake boats (chundan vallams) and of smaller country crafts, the event offers many fascinating sights such as ceremonial water processions, spectacular floats and decorated boats.
Alappuzha beach is a popular picnic spot. The pier, which extends into the sea here, is over 137 years old. Entertainment facilities at the Vijaya Beach Park add to the attraction of the beach. The very old lighthouse nearby is tourist attraction.
