I feel that giving gift is a way to say that you care about a person, or you love a person. Frankly speaking, I really doubt whether any MS member would read my review and decide on a gift for their loved ones.

What to get

I don't beleive in giving or getting gifts, our loved ones don't need a'materialistic' proof of our love(I don't follow this philosophy though). But anyway, I have some experience with giving gifts and getting gifts, thanks to my friends. I normally buy something on spur of a moment, rather then planning for it.

So its important to know the interetss and likes and dislikes of people around you, you need not wait for a occasion like B'day or an anniversery to buy them a gift, buy them something they love or like when even you have the time and the means or the source. The source here means availablibity,  some gifts may be quite restricted and people who travel may come across many such'items' which are not realdly available in India.

My Experiences

I have a good sense of hearing. I get to know the likes and dislikes of people around me, quite fast. I keep everything in back of my mind, and mostly when I travel, the gift I buy is not a planned activity. Like once, when I went to Zurich, I was just roaming around and noticed a swiss knife, which triggred the image of one of my cousins who had once remarked that he would love to have a Swiss Army knife. I brought it, not because I wanted to give a gift, but I knew that he would be thrilled to have it.

When it comes to my dad, the best gift I can give him is a Bottle of Finest Scotch, and a pack of good ciggerettes, he is a very critical drinker, and I just love the way he appreciates a good drink.

My mum loves perfumes and sarees, I buy her a Kanchipuram saree once in a while and perfumes when I travel. She loves Gold too, but I restrict this'gift' as I will go bankrupt if I buy her gold every time I feel like buying something for her.

What people love and What I feel

Women

When it comes to giving gifts to women, I believe that perfumes make the best and safest gift, all women, from your mother to your girlfriend, WILL love perfumes. My latest one is'Miracle', which is quite popular with some of the women folk now.

Men who Drink

A bottle of Chevas Regal or Jack Daniels would be just perfect, and I am telling you your gift would be greatly appreciated. You can try the next category too, I mean if you don't want to gift a'drinker' a drink.

Men Who don't drink

Men like power toys, buy them a palm top or a organizer or a jazzy mobile. They would just love it. My friend was extremely thrilled when I bought him a new Motorola V3698 from Singapore one year back. So for men, fine electronics are the best bet.

Kids

I don't know much about kids, but I guess they love only Pokemon cards now a days, so I nomally come home with couple of those, and distribute them first come first basis. After that, I distribute couple of'Ford Focus' cars in case I bought some, I mean that small car models which are quite realistic.

Friends

Whenever I vist a new country, I bring some good T-shirts with the name of the country on front of it and give them to couple of close friends. Like the one I bought from London'My friend went to london and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt' printed on front, which was widely appreciated.

So that's it, hope that it was a teeny weeny bit useful for you guys.

Peace

Ranjith
