I first was interested in this magazine, because it is the Indian edition of an international magazine, which originated in Germany. German are seriously, very technical people. So, this magazine was in concept, a niche magazine in my mind.
I purchased the magazine, wanting to know, how I would like it. Then it occurred to me, that the magazine is as good for the person who is merely interested in computers, as it is for the well informed techie. The layperson will find a lot which he can be interested in. There are reviews of all computer hardware, and other information technology gadgets like MP3 players, and related products. In fact, I am a great fan, because it is the Indian edition of Chip.
This magazine is eclectic in it's layout. Two magazines, which I have read, and which can be compared to Chip, are computer Active, and PC World, both Indian editions. PC World is fantastic, and it's contents are very easy to find. The layout of PC world is more attractive to Chip. However Chip is more enticing. One feels that one is reading a very technical magazine when one is reading Chip. Computer Active is a very useful magazine, because it is for the layperson, who wants to do a little, no, quite a bit more with his computer. I love the magazine, but I have not purchased the magazine for a long time.
I am very interested in the gaming reviews of Chip magazine, but the magazine has not reviewed any PC games, which I like. I mostly like Military games, which have a basis in some reality. I like to play games based in World war 2, and modern army simulation games. But unfortunately, games like Crysis, are reviewed, which I am not the least interested in. I also like games like Virtua Tennis 2009, and the cricket game by Codemaster, soon to come out. I hope that I can buy the games before they are reviewed, and I hope that they are reviewed.
I think that the closest competition to Chip is Computer Active, and PC World. To be fair, Computer Active is more of a niche magazine, because it is not a regular computer magazine, but it is for the layperson entirely. That makes it a niche magazine. Pc World is as good as Chip, and I suspect, that some may find it better than Chip, but I have a 'Chip fixation'.
