I went to Chilka Lake as part of oorisa Trip. We hired a car indigo from Puri to Chilka lake and return in one day. They charged us 2000 rs. We reached chilka Lake in aroind 3 hours as the road from puri to chilka is small in width but in good condition.
After going there we hired a boat for 1600rs to visit whole Chilka Lake. They covered 4-5 points in this like dolphin point, Satpada island and 2-3 more points I forgot the name of. At dolphin point the sailor showed as many dolphin as promissed, it was first time in life I saw dolphin by naked eyes. They he took us to island and it was amazingly beautiful. There were 5-6 shops and it was fully covered by sand so it reminds you of desert. I would say it is kind of small desert that meet to sea at one point and lake at another.
Food was very good there prepared by the local restautant and it was cheap too.
We enjoyed our trip alot and I would suggest to visit this place if you go to Puri.
