Hmmm, The most awaited film of the year...The 100 Crore Director joins King Khan..Probably the hype created or the expectations from a Rohit Shetty Shtyle film made this movie a blockbuster even before it's release.
But I am a touch disappointed...I don't know whether it was king khan's interference or Rohit shetty trying to play safe...but there was lots of scope for improvisation...but probably taking Shahrukh Khan in an over the top comedy film & in addition the pressure of delivering a blockbuster bogged the director down...otherwise the climax would surely be something different.
I still rate Golmaal 1 & All the best as 2 of the finest comedy films by Rohit shetty...pure unadulterated mad fun...but with Chennai Express..it seems...there was a prescribed limit set with the director not allowing him to go overboard.
Coming to the film...perhaps the best example would be a bottle of coke emptied into a glass.and within few seconds the fizz dies out....to me... every time I felt...now there will be a paisa vasool scene but every time I returned empty handed....As a result the film is just an average fanfare using an age old plot which has been used & reused by our Hindi film industry innumerable times...
The 1st half was a bit draggy...most of the witty one liners were good...Shahrukh Khan looked ever so charming again...& of course Deepika looked as no one else could have played her role the way she did...perrrrfect...30% of the film's dialogues are in Tamil...but that was handled in an exceptionally beautiful manner. The performance of the remaining cast was also good.
Cinematography was excellent....(It feels nice to see some parts of India are still so beautiful)....Deepika Padukone was a revelation in this film...specially in the dream sequence when she turns into a witch...she was tooo goood...(perhaps the best scene of the film)...Shahrukh Khan as always will charm you throughout the film with his flamboyance.
The 2nd half of the film was better than the 1st half in terms of it's pace & the events highlighted...Shahrukh Khan will keep on mesmerizing you in the romantic scenes...Comic timing was also good between the lead actors. Saying dialogues through songs was really funny. But action scenes...seemed a little worn out...not to the potential of Rohit Shetty.
Music was average...I missed the title song sung by S P Balasubramaniam...they should have kept that song in the film..
The biggest disappointment was the climax as it was really pathetic....Overall it's a one time watch with your family...you will enjoy the ride...& to all RAJNI fans...lungi dance is here to stay.
