Curiosity Gets Better Of Me: Of late there is a permanent item in any Malayalam comedy program worth its laugh. The fixture being a take on the movie chandupotu where Dileep plays a ‘guy’ with feminine character. And there has been many a parody of its hit song. All this making me curious to see this film. The film has the usual ingredients of a Dileep movie like homely story, comedy, a couple of fights. I enjoyed seeing this movie even though it doesn’t provide much food for thought nor does it address any cause of such men. Its at best a dramatic presentation of a story which can only be filmi.
Storyline: The story happens around a coastal fishing village in kerala. Central to the story is a family yearning for a girl child. Sounds intresting isn’t it, esp in days of selective female foeticide!! The child is born. Much to the disappointment of the family esp the grandmother the baby is a boy. The director uses a very good song to cover its early childhood up. Continuing their wish for a girl child they bring up this guy as a girl. They dress him like a girl, with longer hair, lipsticks, mehendi etc. He eventually grows up around women & is now behaving like a girl almost. He is now the dance teacher in the village
In the meanwhile there is a rough little boy who finds wicked pleasure in harassing this boy-girl, radhakrishnan for short called radha. In one such kids fight the fathers of both parents enter the scene, and start fighting. It ends when the rough boys dad dies. Radha’s father goes to jail. The rough boy later grows up to be the villain.
The daughter of the local priest cum astrologer is the heroine. She has just failed her tenth exams. Radha is friends with this girl. His father returns from jail & cant digest his boy having grown up as a girl, instead of a fisherboy. Meanwhile the villainous boy wants to take revenge on this man. Since he is the main boat owner, money lender in the area he can afford to harass these people. Meanwhile radha has his first roamtic inclinations on a rainy day which ends up in a romantic song, where they roll over in sand, cuddling each other. Later in the story you will realize in this song he went even the mischievous way ;-)
As in many movies, here the villain also wants to marry heroine. Which means he now has to get rid of radha. The villain uses his clout to have radhas family under abn from villagers, by getting the priest to say that the lack of fishes in sea is bcos sea goddess is angry over the presence of a napumsak in the village. To prove his being man radha decides to go to sea & catch fish. The villain follows him and tries to kill him. radha survives and is rescued by a sea side restaurant owner freddy. He soon becomes their brother and slowly is made to realize the importance of being more manly. And then he finally returns to village to beat up the villain and be united with his girl, who has a boy.
Good Scenes: the director has done well to film this without any obscenity or vulgarity even in dialogues. From start to end except scenes involving the villain the movie is a comic riot. Dileeps acting at every point makes one laugh. I loved the scene where radha is chased by villains chelas & they try to snatch his draped lungi a la dushyasana. The way radha squats on ground to cover his(her) thighs from being exposed using the kurta type longer shirt is real funny. Also the scenes involving radha & bhavana ( freddies sister) after he is rescued from movie is hilarious. Radha wearing the towel till chest after bath & a towel on the hair, and then trying to cover his chest when freddy sees. Finally his getting a hair cut, going to gym are sure to make anyone ROFL or at least LOL ;-)
My bet is very soon this movie might see remakes in tamil, telugu & kannada which expectedly will be more glamourous and far from reality than the original version. I don’t see this coming in hindi as no leading actor would do such a off beat role, since bollywood is so image conscious. If at all bollywood comes with its own version thanks to the sleaze they add, it will be an insult to the original.
who shud see this: anyone who can understand Malayalam will not regret seeing this once. If you don’t follow then its good to wait for other versions. That the reason I have not given the whole plot. ;-)
