Catch an episode of Get Gorgeous(GG part 4)(should instead read as Get Ghoulish for the judges and Get Gibed@ for the contestants).

This show supposedly aims to launch the next supermodel of the country. Going by what has happened to the earlier contestants, we know how tall these claims are…

The auditions were a mere exercise in lampooning, demeaning and deriding the contestants. The auditions at Delhi were appraised by a designer bloke by the name of Gaurav Gupta.  Now, Mr “I am the last word in fashion” Gupta is reportedly the guy who designed Bipasha’s dress at Cannes which was so mercilessly panned by anybody and everybody who set their sight on that apology of a dress. The man coupled with Pia Trivedi caked with a series of listless expressions and a not so endearing tongue practically scorched every participant with their vitriolic barbs. Potshots at everybody seemed to be the order of the day.

Bombay auditions were no different with Upen Patel(whose resume reads serious dearth of talent and minuscule flicker of a flame appearances in eminently forgettable flicks) indulging in behaviour typical of wasted men who we generally club under the head of “contemptible louts”. Pune auditions had debutante Urvashi something trying hard to look intelligent and speak so. she fell hard on her pancaked face. She could barely articulate, BIMBO is also so not adequate to describe her.Bangalore had Druggie Bidappa adjudging it, thankfully he was a lil less censuring. Maybe the drug scandal had “numbed his senses”:-)

Post the auditions they have zeroed in on 10 ostensible gorgeous finalists, the hunt to crown the winner has resulted in acerbic sprays taking the form of a mountain torrent breaking down the sternest of resolve.

From suggesting an alternative career in “B” grade lingerie ads to claiming that their appearances befit a diseased woman with irreparable skin ailments,  the jeers sure hurt. it was so humiliating to even watch them torment the contestants leave alone be at the receiving end. I just wished that some contestant would turn around and plug them real hard.

Sadly even the 10 gals they have zeroed in after an arduous search with a fine toothed comb are so pitiful. They look ugly. sorry to say that but really going by those standards even my maid servant stands a chance of winning the coveted crown. The only one who really looks good in a sultry kind of way is Nidhi from B’lore. There is a lanky gawky pole called Rebecca, a motor mouth DJ from B’lore called Kirtana. None of the gals have any personalities, looks. nothing zilch.

There was an impromptu photo shoot which had a risqué photographer Michhel Haddi asking the gals in skimpy beach wear to pose provocatively with 2 men. The whole shoot was so crass. The only woman who had the guts to not be part of this raunchy circus was Nina, who very promptly got eliminated. Doff my hats to you woman, you were so dignified. I do not even know what to make of a show which has some really lame judges appraising a sorry bunch of girls and to top it crowning one of those grotesque things as the next super model. yikes!

More than anything else what gets my goat is why does reality TV have to be so ruthless.

Okay I think I am gorgeous and stand a chance at being a model, but what if I do not make the cut according to some hare brained judge;  does it make me any less worthy does it entitle me to be booted out unceremoniously, mocked at, ridiculed at. Forgive me for aspiring to be a model, singer, designer… Forgive me for harbouring some dreams. Forgive me for wanting to lend a pair of wings to my fantasies. Forgive me for nurturing hopes and aspirations which you may conveniently term as delusions of grandeur. Forgive me…

One look at these reality shows and the scathing insults flung at the contestants who dared to deem themselves as worthy and you are ready to wince and squirm in discomfort

GG is not the only show I have a concern about, I am against most of these contests moonlighting as reality TV which is merely an exercise in spewing venom at innocent and hapless contestants. Alisha and Anu in Indian Idol were no different during the initial auditions where they shot down many a contestant with liberal dollops of gibes and Bronx cheer. Sajid Khan while hosting Mrs. World is no less acerbic.

What makes these producers of reality TV assume that we viewers satiate our thirst for entertainment by watching some popinjays make malicious remarks at others. The mantra seems to be “ watch the TRP’s soar while the venom pours

. but sorry one woman’s misery doesn’t sweeten my cuppa tea.
