I am just doing a short take off on this movie from where the Pakistanigreywolf left. The movie is now dated and I probably saw it in, when in 1999?

This movie was an eye opener. Having lived in Mumbai, I did not know such dancing bars existed!

The degrading lives of the bar dancers, all women, was depicted in a brutal frank and truthful manner. I was quite disturbed when I got back home. In retrospect, the events shown in the lives of many of the women were true....after all did I expect these women to live any better?

Throughout the movie, Tabu moves from one degrading event in her life as a bar girl to another. Nothing good ever comes her way. Except for a brief spell of martial bliss, she gets into horrifying situations one after another.

There are hundreds and thousands of such women living demeaning lives eking out a living somehow, catering to the hugh demand of the MALE LUST industry in Mumbai. Makes me wonder, if there is a better alternative to live a life, considering that these women come from poor backgrounds, poorly educated and probably not employable. Ofcourse most do not voluntarily come into this profession. They are caught young when they start in this industry, there is always a SAUDA done between an agent of convenience and the parents. Once they check into the glittering monied world of lust, they can never leave. Until mid age, sickness or for the lucky few, marriage to a client ends their depraved lives.

Is there a way out? Folks/NGOs put on your thinking caps.

I recommend this movie to anyone who has the time to see it anytime.

Madhur Bhandarkar become an instant celebrity after this movie was released. sadly he has not made a good movie since Chandni Bar. Tabu fitted the role to a T and must have spent time studying the lives of the dancing bar women. The gangster's role played by Atul Kulkarni was super. All other characters played by not so known stage actors, be they cops, underworld dons, pimps, bar owners, dancing girls was captivating. Scripting and editing- slick.

Dont expect to be entertained after seeing this movie. You will return home in a very disturbed state of mind.
