A rainy stormy night.. A car break down and a discharged cell phone battery..

Two strangers, belonging to the two extremes of the social strata. One an investment consultant, the other a prostitute.. Both having a tormented past..

A perfect recipe for a classy picture. But is Chameli all that?

Aman Kapoor (Rahul Bose) is an investment consultant, living his routine life. He hates parties, he hates his colleagues, he hates rains, he hates his life..

Chameli (Kareena Kapoor) is a prostitute from Kamatipura. She is jolly, and always smiling. She is not your run-of-the-mill Bollywood prostitute who is crying about her profession. She is absolutely proud of her profession, she has no regrets about her lifestyle, in fact she almost claims she is one of the best in her work!!

On a dark stormy night, these two meet..

Chameli was originally conceptualized by the Late Anant Balani and was later completed by Sudhir Mishra. The movie begins very well with the way Aman and Chameli meet.

Then, enter a series of uncharacteristic characters. How each of these characters each bend the plot towards what it ultimately takes shape is what this movie is all about..

The review

Unfortunately for Chameli, possibly with the death of the Late Anant Balani, I think the essence of the movie itself was lost. The plot is there, but the meaning isn't. The actors are there, but the performances aren't. Sudhir Mishra tried too hard, in fact a little too hard to make the movie. He ended up making a piece of nonsense(literally).

The characters and situations that are encountered are like disconnected events, like as if each one of them is a colourful thread, however the threads woven together have formed a mismatched pattern. There is absolutely nothing natural in the events that occur.

About the performances, the less said the better. Kareens looks bad, acts worse. Sharmila Tagore has done it previously (and amazingly at that) in Mausam, Tabu lived her performance in Chandni Bar, but Kareena was just horrible. Right from her sick rendering of Raina beet jaaye to her sick (supposedly sensuous) laughs, she was bad acting personified. I don't think she would get such an opportunity to prove her inexistent acting skills again.

Rahul Bose is not his usual self, he is just about ok. Bearable. The music is nice, in fact wasted in the movie. Bhaage re is well picturised, full marks to the director and the choreographer there.

Chameli is like a life without a soul, like an eye without any emotions, like music without melody.

Chameli is a movie without a script.

You can watch Chameli if you want to watch a movie that was almost a classic, but rather, missed it by miles.
