Chahat was released in 1996, and also directed by mahesh bhatt. Mahesh bhatt has given us some big movies in the past, naam, saaranash,daddy,sadak, dil hai ke manta nahin to name a few, while dil hai ke manta nahin stay my favorite. Chahat was one movie that people were waiting for it was a mahesh bhatt movies, shahrukh was pretty famous after dilwale dulhania le jayenge, but dilwale dulhania le jayenge was the only hit movie by srk in 1995, all the other ones were flop, and everyone was waiting for chahat as well it would create magic like bhatt's old movies. It was big disaster at the box office, people were pretty disappointed from the movie and the acting.
The movie stars shahrukh khan, pooja bhatt, anupam kher,naseeruddin shah and south actress name ramaiya. The music is by anumalik.
Chahat's story is like regular love story Shambhu rathod (anupam kher) and his roop (shahrukh khan) are two folks singers. They live in rajasthan and pretty happy with their life. They make money by entertaining tourists at hotels in jaipur. shambu has a complaint of nagging cough which turns out to be a throat cancer and they leave jaipur and head for bombay to find a cure.
They arrive in bombay hardly shambhu is admitted to a hospital. Roop also has a friend from his village who somewhere lives in bombay, who works in a five star hotel. On arriving at the hotel he finds the birthday bash of a hotel owner ajay narang (naseerudin shah) sister reshma (ramaiya). Roop gets a chance to sing and entertain them that night and ajay narang and his sister take a liking to roop and even offer him a job as a singer in the hotel.
On his way back, roop encounters a beautiful girl who saves him from getting knocked by a speeding car. He forgets to ask her name and he names her zindagi. In The hospital shambu meets a lively nurse pooja (pooja bhatt) and feels strongly that she is the right daughter in law for his son. Meanwhile roop is in love with zindagi and proposes marriage to her.
Reshma on the other side falls obsessively in love with roop and she uses her brothers power to coerce him into loving her. At first roop quits his job when he finds out about this, but as soon as he finds out that he needs a lot of money for the operation for this father, he agrees to marry reshma. Roop is forced to sell his heart, his voice and his love to ajay narang because the sake of his father to save his life.
Similar story like this also has been in the movie ghatak, but ghatak came after this movie and did better business, because better direction, good dialogues, and no overacting. That's how rajkumar santoshi movies are, he might have gotten the idea to make ghatak from this movie but, ghatak was far better then this movie.
I expect more from mahesh bhatt, because in his previous movies he has been able to get better performances from his stars, althought this movie is copied from a hollywood movie a long time I forgot the name the same story boy needs some money, so he leaves the one he loves and goes off with someone else.
The music by anumalik is earpleasing, except one song called daddy cool cool, mera beta fool fool fool oh daddy cola cola sung by bali bramhbhatt. Other songs are all worth listening mostlysung by kumar sanu who is pure magic. Dil ki tanhai ko awaz bana lete hai is one of the best songs of kumar sanu. My favorite song from the album was tumne dikhaaye kuch aise sapne neend mein humne umar gawa di sung by vinod rathod. chahat na hoti was also well sung by kumar sanu.
Performance wise, Pooja bhatt does a nice job always playing the innocent girl in all her movies she has never over acted in any movies though. naserudin shah as narang is okay, but he is a far better acter then what he showed in this movie. Ramaiya is purely wasted. Shahrukh khan what to say about his performances he is allright in the start of the movie when is in the village as soon as he enters the city usko shaher ki hawa lag jati hai. He starts hamming and hamming pretty havily, his monkey like antics in this movie and ram jaane. The ending is the most funniest part, when shahrukh khan keeps hitting himself saying aare narang saala nahin lagta nahin lagta re nahin lagta re.
The person who steals the show was anupam kher, he steals all the scenes away from shahrukh khan or naserudin shah in the ending. Anupam kher shows why he's one the best actors that india's ever had. He is truly a great actor of all times. He does comedy in the movie also.
