I own this for the last 4 months now and yes 'I love it' would be an understatement. Not just that it is loaded with features it is also one of the toughest, making it extremely versatile.
7D (single digit) monicker itself should suggest that it is at the pinnacle of the DSLR food chain. This is the only single digit APS-C size sensor EOS. Canon has developed this masterpiece after years of research and survey spannign more than 5000 professional photographers and serious amateurs. You name the feature, it has it.
Here is the run down of the features:
- 18-megapixel Canon CMOS sensor
19-point Autofocus system with new AF area selection modes including Spot and Zone AF mode
Dual DIGIC 4 Imaging Processors with 14-bit A/D data conversion driving 8 fps capture
New 63-zone iFCL (Intelligent Focus, Color, Luminance) Metering System
Intelligent Viewfinder with liquid crystal overlay and near 100% coverage
ISO speed settings from 100-6400 (expandable to 12, 800) - with Auto ISO feature
Full 1080p HD video capture with selectable frame rates of 24p, 25p or 30p (50p or 60p at 720p HD and SD)
Live view feature
New 3" solid structure Clear View II LCD screen with 920, 000 dot/VGA resolution
- Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for control of multiple off-camera EOS Speedlites
I guess it has it all and more. Now let me share some of the photographic experiences and how these features are helpful.
1. The LCD display is perfect even in bright daylight the images and videos are visible and that too perfectly.
2. I love the 19 point multi dimensional auto-focus system. Earlier models had only two AF modes i.e. Auto Selection of Focus Points or Individual selection of a single point. This has five ways in which you can select auto-fucus with new Zone AF, Precision AF and Spot AF being added.
3. Very fast. You can't miss an action with 8FPS.
4. Auto ISO. Great feature one less thing to worry about while shooting.
5. Extremely good Image Quality (IQ) even in low light. Good contrast and sharpness (this also depends on the kind of lenses one is using)
6. Although I am not a great fan of big megapixels as that compromises on IQ as more pixels are packed in the same sensor size, this camera is an exception. I am able to get good usable crops from this.
7. Custom settings and picture style makes it extremely versatile.
8. Full HD video. Good to have this capability. For me it is whole new learning experience as I am more of a photo person than a video person. But with big aperture prime lenses the videos look absolutely professional quality, even in low light conditions.
9. Being APS-C size sensor (not Full Frame) all my investments in EF-S lenses are still useful.
Yes, it is an expensive piece of equiment. You will have to shell out about Rs. 1 lakh, just for the camera body. Obviously, this is only for serious enthusiasts and professionals.
