The problem that Calgary has is that a lot of people arrive here, (it's a hub , for the airlines, city for western Canada),Calgary is considered the largest City in Alberta, (1 million).

That is because they made their boundaries larger to include every village, town, ranch and estate! Edmonton, the capital of Alberta doesn't do that, but if they did they would be the largest city in Alberta.

This City has the larges number of residence from the United States than any place outside of that Country. The main Industries are cattle, agriculture, the offices of the Oil Companies, (the oil was found near Edmonton, and the refineries are there, as well), but the white collar workers decided to have their offices in Calgary.

The western offices of the Canadian Banks, are in Calgary, (the main offices are in Toronto). Calgary is the Hub for all the Airlines. T

he easiest was to get here is in a car, bus or on an aeroplane. It is a beautiful city with the Rocky mountains, as a back drop, and the Bow and t he South Saskatchewan River flowing through the valleys. It is was built in the foot hills, and at various points the city is quite hilly.

Getting Around The City:

Calgary is a difficult city to drive in. There is no rhyme or reason to their street names. If you are driving get a free map a one of the Tourism Shops, and have them mark out the route you should take. There are a lot of one way streets, which would be fine, but in the morning they are going one way, and in the evening they go the other way. The bus system is good, and they have a LRT, (a rapid transit system). The problem with this system is it is all above ground, and every day, in the down town area, a person is injured or killed. They do have a freeway that rings the city, so you can go to any place fast. The problem is that Calgarians, ignore the speed limit, so be prepared to have everyone pass you.

The Attractions:

The University of Southern Alberta, the wonderful Glenbow Museum, the Alberta Ballet, the Calgary Tower, a nice China Town, the Canada Olympic Park, (the winter Olympics were once held in Calgary), Eau Claire Market, (I find this is a rip-off), and Heritage Park, (a family Amusement Park). If you are visiting Calgary in the summer find the local outdoor markets), a great Zoo, Heritage Park and the famous Calgary Stampede. The modern down town area reminds me of Houston. They do have a great view of the Mountains and wonderful sunsets. The Hotels: You can find a hotel or inn to fit every price range. Calgary is a large city in milage, so it's best to stay in the area you want to be close to.

The Shopping:

Every area of the City has places to shop. In the northern part of the City there are 4 open Mall, that all the Stores are discount Shops.

The Food: You will find Every time of food here, from fast food outlets, cultural Cafes and fine dinning restaurants.

The one thing you must eat is our famous Alberta Beef. I like to eat steak at Hy's Steak House.

Tony Romas makes the best bar-b-cue ribs in the city.

Any Chinese Café in China Town is great. We always order dry salt & pepper ribs, shrimp toast and hot and sour soup.

The Olive Gardens makes great pasta, but they always have a special with all the soup and salad you can eat, (they keep refilling your bowls and plates, as well as the garlic bread baskets).

The weather: The city is on northern edge of the Chinook Wind belt, (the Chinook Winds are winds that come from Asia, loose their moisture while they blow across the 3 mountain ranges, until they reach the prairie Provinces on Alberta and Saskatchewan). I have seen snow that has covered the doors and the windows before we went to bed, and when we woke up, everything was dry, and it didn't look like it snowed at all. Snow can fall from October to June. The think to watch out for in the summer are hail stones, some of gold balls.

Sports:

Calgary is home to the ''Frames'' who are play in the NHL. The Flames are a professional Hockey Team, who play in the Pengrowth Saddledome. From the air the it looks like a horses Saddle. The Stampeders who are the professional Football Team in the CFL. The Stadium they play in is called McMahon Stadium. There are a lot of gold courses, horse back riding, and the famous Woodbine Jumping Horse Events are held here in the summers. We go to see our grandson play soccer and lacrosse, at the Calgary Soccer Centre. There is an abundance of Parks and Swimming Pools.

My Conclusion:

Calgary is a City for younger people, and my daughter and her family live here. It is not my favourite City in Alberta, but if I want to see my Family I do visit here often. I couldn't tell you every thing about Calgary, in 1000 words, so the link is: https://discovercalgary.com Thank you for reading my review. ©LL
