Calcutta news.....BAD news!. Review on Calcutta News Movie

Sify.com wrote a review and they put Calcutta news as riveting cinema....Rivetting????... Seriously????? Did Dileep pay the reviewer to write a good review for this movie sincle all his movies are flopping? Blessy is indeed my favorite director, and this is the worst movie he ever directed..i mean he made such great movies like kazcha and thanmathra, (my absolute favorite), and one will expect another powerful cinema from his hands...Calcutta news is definitely not in the best film list..but I have to say the last 20 minutes of the film is the best although it seems similar to meera jasmine's first film soothradaran.

the theme of this story is based on sex racket....c'mon yaar, how many movies do we have to see sex racket? this theme has been discussed so many times in many movies, and the movies that depicted it well was Achen Urangatha veedu and kanne madanguga...

Story:

Ajith thomas (dileep) is a very famous T.V reporter, daring to take risks, and a intelligent guy who knows everything about the bengali culture..and he is the producer of the channel, Calcutta news.one day he goes to shoot a video on Durga pooja, there  he meets a newly married couple, hari (indrajith) and krishnapriya (meera jasmine) ajith tries to include them on video also, , but the guy gets so mad at ajtih for shooting the video..

after a fews days, Ajith was editing a news story and he found out about a dead man, and this man is hari...Ajith starts wondering what happened to krishnapriya, and finds out that she is locked up in a creepy lodge room...krishna priya is a orphan from pattambi and hari married her and brought her to kolkata..krishnapriya is also a No.1 idiot who doesnt even know what hari does for a living...i mean, I agree she is an orphan and all but doesnt she have the common sense to know what her husband's occupation is before marrying him?

anyways, Ajith develops a soft corner for krishnapriya because she is a pavam. he starts to love her, and I guess she loves him too.. and then ajith founds out that hari used work in a sex racket and his job was to trap innocent girls and hand them over to the villain (krishnamoorthy, he played Sandya's uncle in kadhal) who is the leader of the red light area in Songakachi. the villain kidnaps krishnapriya and Ajiith of course has to save her....and it leads to a very interesting and thrilling climax.

lets start of the acting bit:

Dileep looks ridiculous with a jarring makeup and ugly hair style,

he tries toooo hard to be serious which makes him a miscast sometimes... his bengali dialogues were really good in the end....but his english dialogues....wow...i was laughing the whole time...i mean sure not everybody speaks the Oxford English, but Dileep just screwed it up.he couldve received better coaching in English..i mean that's not embaraassing. he was good in the climax though.on the whole he was very strictly okay. Prithvi Raj would've been better

Meera Jasmine, repeats her pavam girl act again. whatever she did in ore kadal, kasthuriman and swapnakoodu. you see it again in this movie and she hams it to the core..the thing is meera doesnt know how to perform her characters differently, and thats her one weak point as an actress...like there is a scene where she breaks out, and starts crying, and her whole acting sequence seemed very similar to what she did in perumazhakalam and padam onnum oru vilapam...if she wants to stay in the industry for a while she better pick different roles and learn how to perform them differently...on the whole, meera sleepwalks in this film.

Indrajith: Terribly wasted!

Vimala Raman, Binta, Manasa: These three girls play as Dileeps co-journalists in the film..out of the three, Vimala looked good and acted better, I mean she rarely gets these type of roles.

Binta: though she has a limited role, she did well..

Manasa: is she really serious about being an actress?

Innocent: is funny, but he repeats his whole manichthrathazhu act which was better.

bindu panicker: usual role, passable

krishnamoorthy: a scary villain, he is a good actor.

now for the movie:

the major drawback is its one of the cheesiest scripts ever....terrible screenplay and I have no clue why Blessy included black magic in this movie as well..the whole black magic sequence was very erratic. blessy tries to bring this suspense and some thrilling sequences but fails miserably to hold our attention.

"Engu ninnu vanna panchavarna killi" is a good sung sung brilliantly by Madhu Balakrishnan and K.S Chithra..other songs such as "kani kanduvo" were picturized in a very cheesy manner. and the other song, kannada kootile was similar to the song "rappadi pakshikootam" from ente suryaputhriku..

THE MAJOR AND ONLY PLUS POINT IN THE FILM was the cinematography, by the extremely talented S.kumar.he showed calcutta as this beautiful place...its one of the best cinematography in recent times.

another good thing about the movie was of course the last 20 minutes, and the other rest of the movie was good to forget.

i watched the theatre copy of this movie, and I never heard so much booing in the background especially in the scenes where meera jasmine and her Sa Ri ga ma...alot of scenes wheres its trying to show dileep as a intelligent investigative reporter...and the songs...it was really funny to hear the koovals (booing)

Blessy, please dont disappoint me again with trash like this..i thought you were the best director after bharathan and padmarajan, and you still are, but the last two movies, , , , were your worst....i hope you do things will next time.
