One Lazy Monday, twiddling thumbs at home, I was on my way to pick my bitter half from her Office, as it was late. On the way back, we planned to have a late night meal outside the cozy Home. As we crossed Jubilee Check Post, I recalled a little restaurant that caught my eyes, Calcutta Cabiin. For the sake of Adventure and Change of cuisine we landed at the door steps of Calcutta Cabiin(not Cabin).

The restaurant is located, quite conveniently, next to Celebrations Villa in Jubilee Hills opposite to Chiranjeevi Blood Bank. The parking is a Huge Problem, unless the Pavement is a Good parking Lot. There are few fishy characters whiling their time on the bikes in the dark pavement parking bay smoking like chimneys. Well as you enter, your will be surprised that the landing area, is the restaurant, My wife was amused as I am searching for the entry to the main restaurant. It was indeed a Long Cabin! In fact I landed at the Outside court yard, when I breezed through the Opposite door of the entrance. Oops!

Its a small 7-8 tables restaurant, but nice nice little cosy place, hygienic, compact and above all air conditioned. There was not much of a Bengali ambience's to the place except a small hand made painting of Goddess Durga hanging on the wall. The Ladies of the Place were Ms. Vindi n Ms. Karishma, who were there, entertaining a group of their Bengali friends at one end of the restaurant. We could notice a few Bengali toys adoring the Wall behind them. The other end of the dining area ended in an open, partitioned with see through glass having the Kitchen and serving area.

Kitchen was run by three helping hands, two ladies and one male. It was more like a take away Joint than a restaurant. We choose a table near the kitchen, more of a open pantry den to savour the smells emitting from the kitchen and overlooking the street outside as traffic passed by.

Bengal is famous for Literature, Music, Films, and Food  esp. the maccha and the sondesh. At the first look it seemed convincing as the short menu had everything from Luchi and Aloor Dum, from Rohu, Pabda and Tangra Dishes to the famous Ilish Maach, and from Mishti Dohi to Sondesh. After much discussion about what to savor and a little help from the Lady of the House, Karishma, We settled for the Famous Bengali Thalas, One Veg and One Non-Veg. With Fish cutlets.

They served the thalas in white plastic plates, which was not appealing to looks at, it was disappointing. All I could make of the portions served were  Aloo Bhaja, Dhokaar Dalna, Kosha Mangsho, Maacher Kalia, Doi Chicken, Luchi(pooris), Steamed rice, Tomato Chutney and Paayesh(Sweet Dish). The Vegeterian Thali had a Phool Kopir(Gobi) curry along with Malai Kofta and Paneer instead of Mutton, Fish & Chicken. I could not digest the combo of Mutton, Fish and Chicken in a single Plate. There was nothing special about the food or the place, except the name Calcutta, the Bengali Dish names, but flavor missing.

I generally Prefer a Coffee after the dinner, this time preferred to take on some innovate drink named Masala Thums Up! Yep to Masala Thumbs Up, but the Bengali cuisine Thumbs Down!.  Nothing to Say "Khoob Bhalo!"

Being a Bengali cuisine restaurant, I expected at least a Good Fish cutlet, as Bengali people love fish, but alas that was not found. As such Hyderabad is famous for chicken and mutton briyanis. It was disappointing. Later when my BIL, who was eager to go over to the place for a sumptuous fish meal, but I gave thumbs down. I recommend a one time Visit only. May be its best to  visit Bengali friends for tasty Bengali food. LoL!

The Non-veg Thali costs 149 and the Vegetarian Thali costs 99+ tax. No complains about the pricing, but the quality and quantity of food left awful taste in mouth as the expectations from a authentic Bengali cuisine restaurant was high.

Location is Plot No. 66A, 67, Road No. 1, Celebrations Villa,

Jubilee Hills,

Opposite Cheeranjeevi Eye & Blood Bank

Mobile Number is 9963678880  and Ms. Karishma will definitely recognize You and give you a call back.
